Trading gold is a losers game though, as that equation shows. Every trade reduces the total amount of gold amongst all traders. Winners pay taxes on gains, losers.. well they lose even in dollar terms. In the end, that gold represented by such paper does nothing but exist, as gold. There is no positive earnings to be had, the ecosystem can only ever decline in total value. You may see nominal profits trading gold as you earn a larger quantity of depreciating dollars, but on the whole real wealth is being destroyed as taxes are paid to the US government.
Traders outside the US jurisdiction may find their governments have preferential policies. I'm talking strictly in terms of US residents/citizens.
