You have to apply to a ton of positions. I'm talking like 40-50. Even ones you don't think you're qualified for. We are very strict with hiring. When I go into work, it feels like a eurasian ethnostate. My team is actually expanding right now, and our program is a once in a generation black money project developing something we've never done before. I can't give too many details, but I will say this - we've traditionally been an aerospace company, never really built ground vehicles, and due to current events a certain type of vehicle is "cool" again, and the US hasn't built a new one in a long time. Yes, it's probably the one you're thinking of.

I noticed this myself when I was checking jobs recently. I don't think any of the major defense contractors pay a salary competitive with your average tech becky startup, even though the work produces something more useful. Maybe if you qualify for "anti submarine sonar engineer level 5", but the only people that could qualify for that already are hired.
