A lot of different reasons.

You had boomers who retired early. People who were so demoralized that they just said "fuck it". Vaccine mandates killed at least 0%-1% of people who would not take the vax under any circumstances. You had people who thought if they were to die tomorrow, if they would truly be happy changing their lives. A lot of people moved. A lot of people died. Some people made it on crypto and meme stocks so they decided to take time off. So much shit happened, you can't really point your finger at one thing.

Here's the reason why, from the perspective of someone who quit their job during COVID:

Many of us had a chance to reflect during our time of WFH during covid, and we came to the conclusion that working 30-40 years alone wasn't going to give us a good life. A huge reason for this is the skyrocketing cost of living overall, with the real estate market skyrocketing being a major catalyst to the cost of living debacle.

In short, we're seeing it as:
> Work harder and harder every year for that promotion, but in reality, we're working harder and harder every year for less and less pay when you consider inflation and the cost of living being at the very tip top of the inflation problem

So yeah, inflation is a huge reason why many of us got demoralized and quit. Also, boomers quitting in masse are making it substantially more difficult to fill the gap, which only exacerbates the problem even further.

For most industries, third world labor is cheaper for the same value. It only leans towards the first world at the higher ends of the income ladder (management and above).
>>53863677
It was sort of the opposite for me. While reflecting during COVID, I saw the trajectory of my life as the result of my parents' and grandparents' work and sacrifice, and how rare my kind of income/lifestyle is. It made me want to work harder to protect that privilege and pass it onto my children instead of settling for "good enough".

You have to think about getting a job like trying to court a woman. The one essential detail that both of these in common always leave out is:

> We want an elite tier (top 5%) boyfriend/worker, but with the pay/treatment of a 3rd worlder

That's the one extremely critical detail they always leave out. Your problem is that each workplace either considers you underqualified or overqualified. Forget about them anyways - they were going to lowball you with pay anyways.

I don't think any of them are missing. There are many job openings, because people found new jobs and don't want to go back to their previous shit job. COVID allowed people who would have worked the same shit job all of their life to have a breakthrough, and realize that there job was completely ass and there's better jobs out there. So really what has happened is that every place with openings needs to raise their wages incredibly, because, they're fucking shit jobs nobody wants to work.

A lot of blue collar construction type jobs have some quasi seasonality to them. You work whatever the "building season" is for your industry and then quit for a while. Some of these guys work a couple different trades with different season for more money.

People are either dropping the second season or shaving down their living expenses and taking the main season off every other year or so. Anyone who doesn't have a rigid 260 day contract can pass on doing more than the basic contract if they keep their expenses down.

Not to get too stereotypical, but a lot of the dudes I knew would pull extra shifts to buy certain consumer goods. Home improvements, boats, off-road vehicles, motorhomes. Shit like that. That shit used to be affordable for a regular dude, and now it's not.

They used to give out ski boats all the time on the price is right. It was just a normal thing that normal people could hope to afford one day. Now you're looking at $75k minimum for anything decent.

You can get by on minimum wage after subsidies. Some people can get a minimum wage salary working less than 1/3 of the year. That's where the gap is coming from; there's no reason to go above and beyond survival since you can't afford to actively participate in society with the extra tokens you generate.

So yeah also

Someone making $2 in 1970 would be the same as making $50 today

So yeah that's like

Probably the issue

I mean

I'd think you know, that makes sense right

Issue seems to be that certain things are the same price as they were in 1970 or close to it

And certain things arent

See

Maybe the system would work, if everything that was $2, became $50, that would make linear sense would it not.

But that didn't happen, some things stayed the same, others inflated exponentially. Some things got cheaper.

It's almost like, it's all made up and the points don't matter........

That's fucked and it's not right and it's just debt slavery to the state and federal government with extra steps, so now I don't even get to get pussy anymore because every time it risks having another kid. Until the world becomes a place where a burger flipper can afford a couple kids and insurance and a car and a home, I'm going to actively go out of my way to rely on as much subsidy as possible and do as little as possible to continue to survive. Half because it's funny to me, and half because I hate the current state of things. IT is cutting useless middle management basically. And I think they deserve this. Lots of them don't even know most basic tech concepts and yet are in position to make decissions. At the same time they have overblown egos because they have "manager" title.
Software engineers are very good at organizing stuff, including their scope. They need maybe a tech lead + product owner to decide scope and that's it.
Meanwhile many tech companies had 1:1 ratio between software engineers and middle managers for some reason. And all of those managers were bothering tech guys in struggle to find a way to make themselves useful.

There is literally zero element to his job that can't be done on the laptop. It's all just scrolling through accounts looking for blatant money laundering; you'd be surprised how little effort many people put into doing that, and the scale of it.

But they're now being called in to a new office miles outside of town with waging cubicles and there seems to be absolutely zero explanation of what that's actually supposed to achieve. All they do is go in, and repeat what they do normally but in a wagie cubicle.

The only justification seems to be to validate the supervision roles by having them "supervise" the wagies for one day of the month.
