Honestly it's probably pathological in nature. Every shop has at least one junk drawer, and for good reason. Sometimes that one weird coupling you threw in there a couple of years ago is JUST RIGHT for the hose you're replacing, and it saves you $10 and a trip to the store, or 3+days of waiting if you order it online.
