Let’s say a girl is interested in you, but you don’t find her hot. Thing is, you (usually) don’t find her ugly either, so you go with it and become her boyfriend. It’s a relationship with no passion on your side (since you don’t find her hot), but you get the girlfriend experience nonetheless (meeting her friends, meeting her parents, going to events together, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, whatever). The idea is that you go through that stuff, and if you mess up some things it doesn’t really matter, hence your girlfriend being a practice girlfriend. An advantage is that you don’t feel socially inadequate as you do in fact have a girlfriend. Some guys however end up marrying their practice girlfriend without really loving her, which is not ideal.
