Apple just missed earnings for the first time in 7 years. Before that, in 2016, they hadn't missed earnings since 2001.

I can't be sure, but I think inflation is still gutting earnings. These companies are big, these companies are strong, but they're struggling, doing their financial jiu jitsu, easily defeating their opponents, but they're still getting a workout. And eventually they're gonna get tired.

All biotech is very risky and jumps/dumps all the time.
They react to clinical trial results. If you pass phase 1, you get a huge jump (that you should sell into because it typically goes back down rather quickly as well), but if you fail, the stock price goes to fucking nothing overnight.
Phase 1 is very early. If they don't have at least one product already in production, it's very likely none of their candidates will get anywhere, because beside the inherent difficulty of finding something viable (meaning safe and effective), navigating FDA approval is its own bullshit. This increases failure likelihood greatly.

Hedging gains. Best way I can explain it is via commodity hedging.
Oil companies always eat shit after reporting massive hedging losses. If you hedge 2 years worth of oil at $70 and then it goes to $120 next quarter, you have a $50 loss on every single barrel that must be recorded immediately. That's 2 whole years worth of massive losses compressed and recorded as a single quarters loss.
If oil then reverts back down and lands at $80, you have the opposite - a massive gain.

The company entering the hedge doesn't care. This is all just financial noise. Their production cost is $50 and they're content with some solid margins locked in. The actual cashflow happens over each quarter as the hedges slowly expire, earning a true profit of $20/bbl on a single quarter worth of production at a time.

With JXN, they hedged against interest rates primarily. Interest rates are now up massively thanks to rate hikes. Huge profit, but their actual earnings are the small gap between the variable annuity payout they offer, and the returns they expect from their own investments.
If interest rates ever drop, they'll see a fat loss. Even if interest rates never drop, they'll see slow losses in future reporting because the full multi-year gain has already been baked in. The actual spread of profit is that small margin they negotiated in selling the thing.
Also should be noted that future profits will depend on them continuing to achieve new sales. I don't see this as a problem considering the huge wave of boomer retirees, but this will be the real driver in any long term future share price appreciation.

The good earnings are from hedging, apparently? That's what this dude points out in "Fundamentals - Value Play in Question":
https://seekingalpha.com/article/4544041-jackson-financial-is-a-hold

Published back when it was like $28, but it looks like the mean reversion juice is squeezed if that hedging no longer provides a tailwind and the core business is stagnant.

a couple weeks ago i also looked up "are there self driving trucks" and apparently Freightliner has done demos and is closest to release, and theyre owned by MBG

so basically i think theyre the leaders in both electrics + autonomous, Tesla being more innovative but riskier (not least because of elons antics) and MBG being safer

my thinking is also that even as other automakers catch up to them in releasing electrics/autonomous, theyre going to be paying either Tesla or MBG a shitload to use their tech and parts rather than taking the risk of trying to do it inhouse

this is probably the most innovative interior ive seen - all-glass dash in the mercedes EQS luxury electric

they call it "all screen" but its not exactly, theres 3 square screen displays under the all-glass panel,

in any case this seems laser targeted toward zoomers. like im sure you've all noticed the huge increase in people going around with all sorts of neon LED faggotry on their cars yeah? this is that vibe.

i also really do NOT like the way Teslas shifted from having an inset screen in the dash to having a gayass glass tablet sticking the dash. i testdrove one and it felt like an apple store on wheels. fuck tablets. thats why i got a 2018, last model year before they added those fuckin things. idk, probably speaks to zoomers though since the first thing they saw out the womb was an ipad

If you can DCA comfortably then yes, you should unironically go 100% TQQQ/SOXL/something similar. If you just have a lump sum to throw around, you risk losing it all. The gains you can make in a downturn on a 3x leverage are insane, DCAing during a downturn at a reasonable rate is enough to make you rich within 5 years. It is also virtually impossible to go bankrupt on those because that would require a dump harder than 33% in a single day on the underlying, except that's impossible due to muh breakers. This doesn't apply to things like commodity leveraged ETFs though.

yes i agree in theory. my first car was all analog and all the cars id been in that had screens & computers have been dogshit and laggy as fuck, like windows phone tier

however the tesla screens dont lag at all. its butter. and mines a bit old at this point, still butter even after updates.

i mean thats not surprising, it needs a good computer to run FSD obviously. but its a world of difference from the shit tier computing in other automakers cars that ive seen so far.

basically i only trust the germans to do it right other than tesla which is already doing it, and i think ford/GM are just going to end up licensing either MBG's tech and software or teslas and paying out the ass for it

i would trust the japanese to do it also but i think their corporate traditionalism is fucking them over, my guess is that they will shrink back a bit to their domestic market and continue making traditional cars - and thats not that bad b/c japan has some idiosyncratic domestic auto needs & habits in kei cars and other hypercompacts that they dont export

in terms of high end electrics theres also Polestar (picrel is 2026 concept) which is owned by Volvo which is owned by Geely, they look fleek as fuck but i dont think theyre doing autonomous so idc really aside from wanting one

zoomers are basically all gonna go electric and the reason why is pretty obvious

they ZOOM

my favorite fucking thing to do in the WORLD is, when im lined up at a light with a BMW or a charger or a mustang, i floor it - but only up to 35mph. the takeoff is insane - the 0-60 time doesnt really even give you a sense of it, because as good as it is, the 0-35 is even better relatively.

and then the gas cucks have to go into brraaap mode just to catch up and pass me at like 50mph while im already cruising with autopilot back on.

and i started driving gas. im not that young. to anyone who grew up using electric scooters and electric bicycles, the physics of an electric car are going to feel way more familiar.

also zoomers no like stinky dirty things. gasoline smell bad. both my younger sisters would pull these "ouhuhuhooh im so nauseous" thing whenever we had to get gas b/c of the smell. imagine trying to get a zoomer to check oil on a regular basis. it aint happening.

as far as glass goes, glass-ceramic tech has gotten way better in the last decade or so, mostly for the purpose of making all-glass smartphones that dont shatter when dropped and having more scratch resistance

so the glass itself isnt that fragile. connecting components are the weak point obviously but as in this setup theyre crucial for the car to work *at all*, i would hope theyd be made more sturdy

i think there is an untapped market for very cheap, analog cars in the US, but its not something that most automakers care to provide as the margins are so low

there are some cars like this in the chinese market but they arent really imported

im actually watching Kantanka closely, its a Ghanaian company that assembles basic trucks & sedans from Chinese parts with cheap Ghanaian labor. They sell sedans for whats $6k in american and trucks for $14k.

getting them certified for import is a barrier but i think there could be political pressure to do so as its a Black Owned Business obviously which appeals to liberals, and the founder is also a megachurch pastor so conservatives should like it

picrel is Kantanka Omama. i could definitely see a market for basic cheap pickups like this in agriculture etc especially at $14k or even $20k if thats what it ends up being after import

this does assbite sometimes though - i forget what its called but theres a company that for a long time just made very simple heavy duty industrial washers & dryers, didnt really sell to consumers, but lately theyve been expanding massively in selling to home use customers. their washers'dryers are like 3x the price of a maytag/whatever consumer one, but they last forever and they DONT beep and boop in seven different ways. was reading an interview with the ceo where he was like "idk why people are buying ours for 3x the price of a maytag, mostly we hear that its people who had 2 maytags break on them in 2 years. we werent sure if we should start selling to consumers because we didnt design with them in mind but we wont complain"

Plus it's like cheering about META's rally even though it's far below ATHs. It all seems like a mirage given mass tech layoffs, inflation still being shit, disposable income being at a significant low point, etc. Ultimately the markets are a trailing indicator to retail activity, but one way or another there will be a U-turn on this hyper-speculative bubble.

and the kicker is, theyre so safe that literally no one has EVER died in one in the united states

Call me schizo but I'm starting to think financial markets are associated with some cultural societal shift in testosterone and every time we have some aggressive leader with strongman tactics or jock attitude we do very well, and its amplified with global conditions, it drops hard when a strongman leader is gone or jock mentality is gone or there is a sign of defeat at a national level.

>dotcom bubble loses steam after clinton is impeached
>housing bubble and markets pump up when bush jr was president, a sort of "andrew tate" to baby boomers
>trumps 4 years markets kept going up, accelerated with floyd riots
>everything bubble pops a few months after withdraw from afghanistan

I think elites want to get rid of biden and install a younger president with a jock mentality. They are mocking biden a lot and are bringing out trump, but its clear to me they dont want trump directly but someone with the same big attitude again. Like they want to meme some small civil war or conflict in america then we break past ATH again.

I don't think Cohen's an idiot, but I do think the brainless followers are. Those features you mentioned seem more like a way to capitalize on hype rather than viable business ideas. I could be wrong, but we likely won't know conclusively for 3+ years. Perhaps GME investors will never admit they're wrong.

I wouldn't really call Chamath an idiot either, but he did unload a bunch of trashy SPACs on his retail followers. I view Cohen the same way. Both have found a solid base of suckers that'll follow them to the grave, and both are smart enough to monetize that follower base to the full extent possible.
Obviously Cohen has a track record of success with chewy though. At one point in his life he did run a business successfully. Though personally I don't even think CHWY is a great business, I see it more as an example of successful fundraising. More reinforcement to the idea that he's a master at hyping suckers to follow along and give him money.

theres tons of really cheap ones with 100k ish miles - i think the mile number scares people off but these are well made, up to 250k miles with no issues is pretty normal

Well tell those boomers to hurry up and go back to the Dow Jones. FAGMAN is still a large part of the S&P500 cuz of their 401K passive investing BS.

From what I've witnessed the simp-flation is still way too high. Powell needs to jack the feds funds rate a lot higher.

while i was in CVS earlier i heard an apple radio ad that went as follows. this is the *entire* script for the spot.

(teen girl voice) If I switch to iphone, will I have all the latest updates?
(millennial woman voice) Yes1 iphone has the latest software, right out of the box, and future updates with no loss of performance. switching to iphone puts you in control.

remembered it word for word because it sounded so retarded. what updates? what software? out of the box? do they just mean having the latest version of iOS? the second part is obviously damage control about the slowing-down-older-phones thing, but what even is the pitch here? androids have to update for a few hours when you get them? (not sure if thats true but im assuming, i buy old ass androids and dont update them) - thats really the pitch theyre going with?

not out of line with other ads for zoomers being like "did you know a credit card lets you pay for things later? DiscoverCard!" and "let me explain briefly what a dryer sheet is" which ive heard lately - but it seemed particularly weak even in that regard

hoenstly iphones are just boring, i think theyre losing the high end of the market to more-expensive android models like the curved-screen and foldable ones, and pretty quickly i think they'll become a "mom thing" instead of a "trendy young instagrammer" thing, and then theyre fucked. not "fucked," but doomed to age with their demographic unless they recapture youth somehow.

So do I. I've had one for a month now and I mostly re-charge the battery between forgetting wherever the hell I put it. It's a phone though, and unlike my Pixel it can actually make a phone call.
