A couple where both people made minimum wage salaries used to be able to afford a house and raise a family, maybe even buy a new sedan every 6 years. IN THE CITY, where prices are even higher.

On two minimum wages.

How do we adapt to this?

How do we create our own idea of the American dream since all that is out the window?

Build a 1200 sq ft house instead of a 3500 sq ft house on a few acres outside of town
Invest in solar panels and a water well, have a garden, drive a $20k car instead of a $40k car

If this were true there would nave been no poor people in the past. Things are worse now but be realistic.

That would be crushing loneliness playing video games in the parents basement while watching them cluelessly spend any inheritance you might ever get while pushing you to get a “good paying” $12/h wage slave job half of which goes to taxes and the other half goes to health insurance

Produce more products, print less money, being in less immigrants. Unfortunately no western country that exists today is capable of doing any of this so just keep buying up assets or die. It’s a mostly hopeless situation

I almost want the U.S. to lose its powerful position in the world today and another country that's still in early stages of development to take the spot. It would be the only way I think.

In 1964 the minimum wage was five 90% Silver Quarters. In 2023 those same five Quarters have a melt value of $29.34.

This video explains it well if you are interested:

My grandma was arguing me the other day how she raised a family in $5 an hr in the 60s I told her that’s the equivalent of $45/hr in todays time and adjusted relative to housing costs $100/hr for working a low status nurse job

The entire system needs to be entirely reformed but it's not going to happen if we're being realistic. Only a very small portion of Millennials and Gen Z are ever going to be homeowners.

I think housing prices will correct. Simply put when the median income in america is 60k a year the median house price can not remain at 400k for very long. a 60k income supports a house in the 180-240 range. Thus one of 3 things must happens, prices drop, wages rise, or 3 the median person can no longer afford to own property. 3 happening leads to a political revolution that ushers in communism to steal private property. then again that's already happening so maybe 3 is right on the money.

My grandfather made 16 dollars an hour as a college graduate in 1972. Using government lies of inflation that's 110 dollars today. What college grads are making 220k a year today working a 40 hour week?

It's no lie that things were MUCH easier in the past than they are today. Especially from the view of one parent working and supporting a nice middle class life. Hell it's not even very common for 2 people working to clear 200k today and match the quality of life he provided on a single income.

the fact that he said "build" should tell you everything you need to know, that you're replying to a NEET or a delusional teenager. even a modular home is like $100-150/sq ft with site improvements factored in, on top of the cost of land.

still a lot. pic related is double wides, but you get the idea. the cost of improving the land isn't cheap either. my parents did it 30 years ago and it's an ordeal. digging if you want a basement foundation, grading, trenches for utilities hookup, etc.

>> No.53401570

>>53395051
this is a teenager. you can't do that in any decent metro area without 400k+ cash. land alone is going to be 200k within 30-45 minutes driving distance, and will taper down to 100k the farther you go... if there's anything cheaper near where you live it means the wages are also lower so adjust your number accordingly. fucking off isn't a viable option anymore, you still have to pay taxes which will go up as you age because you're in an extreme minority that wants to self segregate from the social contract.

New American dream is owning a car without financing and 10 tinder matches per year. But we're still stuck in the archaic unattainable boomer ideal until they're all dead
