more like
>send crypto to XXAAXX
>scammer sends a 0-value transaction from "your address" to XXBBXX
>scammer hopes next time you send crypto to XXAAXX, you send it to XXBBXX

it "works" because erc20 tokens have the allowance mechanism (so smart contracts can work) that allows a certain address to move tokens from your wallet.
normally this value is 0 of course, which means anyone can initiate a 0-value transferFrom call from anywhere (unless token contract disallows 0 value transfers, which i guess isnt the standard)

these transfers will show up in etherscan as well, which is the next requirement

the victim needs to be retarded enough to go like "i have to send crypto to the same address as before, let me just grab it from ETHERSCAN ERC20 HISTORY"

the scanners themselves have started to gray out the 0-value transfers, so not sure if much of an issue anymore. i guess it'd be best if they were completely hidden by default.

oh and the more matching digits you want, the harder it is to calculate one.

8 matching hexadecimal digits (4 beginning, 4 end) is a 1 in 4 billion chance in any two random addresses.

the scammers have likely pre-calculated all these 4 billion wallet addresses into a rainbow table, so they have a similar looking address ready for everyone.
