There's multiple things going on
1. Is actual 'appropriations'. This is what congress decides the government is going to spend on programs (military, medicare, parks, and so on...)
2. The 'deficit' is the difference between how much spending congress appropriates and how much revenue (taxes) is brought in. The deficit gets filled by debt (Treasury selling bonds)
3. The national debt is the total value of bonds outstanding, that still need to be paid back. Debt is rolled over, so the Treasury sells new bonds to pay off the old bonds (in addition to selling new bonds to cover new spending)
4. The debt limit is a limit set by congress on how high the national debt is allowed to go. Above that, the treasury cannot sell new bonds.
You might have noticed that congress does two things here... they decide how much to spend, and decide how deep in debt the country can go. The problem is that there's a mismatch when congress decides to spend one amount of money, but also chooses not to raise taxes or raise the debt limit high enough to cover that spending. When that happens, the Treasury can move money around for a while, but eventually they won't be able to sell new bonds to rollover and pay off the existing bonds........and that's the nightmare scenario

Well, once the Treasury can no longer sell new bonds, it has to start making decisions about where to allocate any incoming funds (from taxes, and rolling over some bonds while staying under the limit). Legally... that money is supposed to go to the programs that congress appropriated the funds to. So... it goes to the military, medicare, parks, etc... because the appropriation acts are basically laws. So the government won't shut down (that happens when congress fails to pass appropriations, so Treasury legally cannot give those agencies money). However, since money is legally required to go to agencies/programs first, then there isn't money to pay interest or pay off bonds.......so then the US in default on its debt. That's the nightmare, because suddenly US debt becomes worthless, and US treasury bonds are like THE baseline for the entire world's financial system.
