At least Kohls's management was smart enough to try and sell it piecemeal to Amazon. BBBY sells everything Amazon has but more expensive and less variety. It will share the same fate Radioshack, Fry's and Circuit City did unless they bring in new suppliers and new inventory that people want to buy. This is doable, look at Target or Ikea: shitty stuff, but built specifically for them and fits into college dorms, studio apartments and starter homes well. BBBY's current inventory is made for cool wine aunts and women who shop at the adjacent Pier 1 or Total Wine.

Anyone buying BBBY is a fool, and I'd argue buying Kohls stock is stupid too versus regular Amazon stock.

There won’t be mention of bankruptcy, M&A, or bonds on an earnings call. It’s an earnings call not a company update call. It’s specifically meant to discuss sales performance of the fiscal quarter.

Sue’s job is to always say the company is trying to improve, because it’s her fiduciary obligation to improve it.

The results were bad. They just were. Even with some progress in cost savings, they are still at the same $100M/month negative cash burn rate they’ve been for a year as a result of massively declining sales ‘keeping pace’ with the cost saving measures. The promises we heard this quarter are the same they’ve made every quarter.

A YoY loss of revenue of over 30% is a catastrophic drop. Getting back those customers and dollars will be a long term, difficult, and expensive ask.

Welcome Rewards growing by 6 million is one hopeful indication they are driving customer loyalty, but these member numbers won’t matter if it doesn’t translate into revenue.

Officially out of free cash on hand, they are now using their credit facility (taking on debt) for liquidity. They have two quarters left until that credit line is maxed at current cash burn rates.

Sales also decreased by over 20% at BABY. The lifeline BABY has posed is getting shorter.

TL;DR - Sales are dropping faster than cost saving measures and cost savings has a limit to how deep they can cut. BBBY bleeds $100M every month and is now taking on debt to operate. Revenue needs significant improvement, but it’s trending the opposite direction, and reclaiming that level of customers/dollars is a very tall order that requires time and money - two things BBBY is very scarce on.
