Because what they've been doing isn't even that hawkish in the first place. The rate hikes are largely performative - why didn't they just jack the rates up to 5% in March? Even then, rates would have been historically low. Here's what I think. The Federal Reserve is going to continue its restrictive monetary policy and run off the billions of dollars from it's balance sheet that fueled this market for the last 2 years. This is going to lead to a very bad equities market and we could see it drop considerably further from here. Now I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm also looking further down the road. The slow down in economic activity that these restrictive policies will cause should lead to a decreased demand for oil as well, I'm projecting oil prices to stay relatively flat $65-$75 going into the early spring even as the federal government stops releasing from the strategic reserves.
