I generally know of this but I can't find any good sources that aren't scam sites trying to sell marked-up gold and silver bullion. (I am not saying all such sites are scams, I own gold, but these search results sure are.)

You could at least buy treasury bills with some of the money instead of forfeiting the deposit insurance. I'm not saying either is great for peace of mind but it's better than swimming naked with no promise of insurance.
I also realize that much money is silly to keep in physical cash for theft reasons, and the banks would certainly put you on a list if you asked for it. Sucks.
Some in T bills, some in boomer ETFs, plus some BTC and a little bit of gold in the safe is a good start.

Yeah, solid advice. I think the reality of what happened is that I was going to buy a house and pay for a larger amount than normal in cash to lower the mortgage in a time when mortgage payments are high but after looking I just couldn't commit while I kept missing deadlines for interest rates to keep rising and just stopped looking. Maybe I'll commit next summer finally. Maybe they'll come down a bit more by then and I'll just pay a decent amount in cash so that the high interest rates aren't the end of the world.

I have thought about how a crisis would unfold quite a bit. My belief is that they would print more money to reimburse people if the FDIC fund dries up.
As the dollar is the reserve currency of the world, we can do that without relegating the dollar to immediate shitcoin status (for the time being). At least, enough could be printed to calm down the normies. More was printed "due to covid" and nobody batted an eye.
My understanding is that countries like Cyprus use a bail-in because either 1) they gave up currency-creation power to a higher power, the ECB, or 2) they couldn't bail everyone out without absolutely destroying their currency. I believe the US has both of those semi-covered for now, though I obviously realize the problems with printing money.
