I hit the 'wall' (lol) around 27 and decided I wanted to get married and stop messing around. i went on 70 tinder first dates before i met my husband, and when i met him he told me i was the only person he ever met from tinder. I liked Never Split the Difference the most, because of how practical it was. More of a manual with case studies attached. I don't mind negotiation because I'm pretty assertive, but I don't think the useful nuggets were necessarily about negotiating, but the simple things he mentioned to build rapport, like mirroring and open ended questions, or accusation audits. Ive started and stopped youtube like 5 times. Every time I was gaining traction in the sense that every new video would get more than the last.

The issue is that I rewatch my own videos a lot, find flaws, and want to start over.

So last couple of weeks I found that my actual job title gets a lot of searches on youtube and low competition, especially 'day in the life' - so I was gonna do that as my "hook" video. So once people see a hook/viralish video, they look at the rest of the stuff on your channel, and you kind of have to make an impression that you're interesting.

So initially I was going to do stuff about my job (corporate strategy type stuff) and also loop in self improvement, goal setting and my experience with that stuff.

I recorded a couple test videos but honestly there are people in my field who make amazing educational content already, even HBR on youtube makes a lot of stuff I would essentially 'remake' so I kind of soured on that idea.

I could still use my day in the life as a hook, but lead them to a channel about something else.

So new idea is to focus on my art hobby, talk about ideas.

This is gonna sound dumb, but I read a kanye interview from like 7 years ago and he just jumps around between interesting ideas and I felt like I could do that in the context of my art.

I wrote in a notebook today a bunch of stuff I could focus on, like one idea per video, in the context of showing some of my art and a couple different scenes.

The videos would be like thought-moments. I'm thinking not super long. I know the algo likes long videos but fuck that. I think videos should be as long as they should be to be good.

here are the ideas I sketched out today:
- less is more. the blank canvas. nothing you ever make will be better than the blank canvas. thinking additive vs subtractive. the blank canvas reminds you you can always start new.
- (don't) change your life. people don't really change, even with crazy efforts they often go back to how they were. its better to change your context.
- nurture your inner artist by reframing everything as a creative idea to explore. don't answer questions directly (ye inspo for sure)
- process art. the journey not the destination.
- rating some of my artworks. i have thousands of pieces of work from the years i've been doing it. i hate most of them lol.
- being careful with your creativity. don't share too much when its not ready. critisism at the wrong time can kill a beautiful idea, no critisism can make a beautiful idea ugly.
- making art is massaging my brain. flow. water. drink water.

Got a new job this year and the Christmas party was at a big fancy downtown place. I dressed nice and brought a cute girl but left with a creeping feeling that I have basically no personal rapport with anyone at my workplace, that a handful of key players actually harbor a quiet disdain for me, and that this will hamper my opportunities going forward within the company. At my old job I never cared but it was a dead-end and I stayed years too long, this was a major career change (never worked in an office before, and being inept at Office Politics both from my interpersonal manner and my lack of experience, was my biggest fear going into it) so the idea of being unable to further myself in this organization really stung in a highschool-kinda way. I'm no longer working blue collar, which was the goal, but compensation-wise this was a lateral move, and probably a step down when you consider the weaker benefits package, so I'm not content with Where I'm At and the closing window of opportunity to Get Ahead is really upsetting.

My advice to you is start execising that social muscle and remember you're going to bump your head yourself along the way, but that's okay, As long as you keep good optics, but be edgy and learn to read a room. pc culture in corporate america is rampant and it's best to just stay out of trouble in this department. don't beat yourself up about not having rapport, just start build relationships (most won't be long lasting, you'll get practice and who knows maybe one of these relaitonships will lead you to your next job). always keep your eye on what's happening in your industry and at industries at large so you don't become obsolete. make sure that the skills you are building extend beyond 20 years and can't be automated. good luck.

I appreciate the perspective on offer. Yeah I would believe that it's not THAT bad but I know that in between me and the people whose opinion I care about in the organization is a clique of popular-kid-types and at least one of them (a peer/rival) is decidedly boxing me out. It makes me feel bad and I don't know how to get around it. I'm very image-conscious, and I do know that a few of the people who matter most have a high opinion of me, which I look for opportunities to cultivate. I do know what it's like to have a Very Successful corporate event, and there were a few positive interactions last night. But there was one person #1 on my list of priorities for the night who I just absolutely could not find a way into a conversation with. She definitely saw me around and I don't think she avoided me at all but I had a particular goal in mind and ugh it REALLY ate at me that I never found a proper moment to make it happen.

Yeah. Probably just touched a nerve from when I was young and didn't have my stuff so together. And I'm very well aware about the girl! I guess deep down my big itch was that I did want to introduce her (and not as just a ditzy armpiece - but as a very strong character in herself) to The People I Was Trying To Impress, which I didn't quite get to. The Cool-Kids definitely saw and noticed and I received, today at work, some seemingly-legitimate props just on the basis of her looks and surface-deep social manner. But the "script" I wanted to get to was definitely, at least in part, introducing her in a way that made me seem more-impressive. Props to her, she was also prepping her own "elevator pitch", for her own sake as much as mine.

I actually noticed some girls with new boyfriends trying to do the same thing, and come to think of it, they seemed to have similar struggles. I guess you're right it's not a natural circumstance. Everyone seems to know that it's a game with certain moves you're meant to play, with varying degrees of difficulty. I didn't embarrass myself, I had some strong showings, but I did wish I made one or two different moves. That's all just good experience in learning how to play the game, I should be thankful for. I'm still young-enough (at 28) that there's time to get better and better at it. At least I was playing very deliberately and not simply unaware that there was a game being played.
