>Physics
Genuinely curious what makes people choose majors like that, is it just liking science vs coding, math, etc? I can't imagine there are too many career options outside of being a teacher for Physics.

Timing has a lot to do with it. I had friends who went to law school and graduated in 2012 and the best they could get was waiting tables.

Also, law
>the most hated profession in America
>divorce rates are laughably high
>most lawyers regret their career decision
>the work is not like movies: 1% of lawyers are doing "To Kill a Mockingbird" legal stuff. The rest are litigating between two corporations fighting over a font used on a billboard 18 years ago.

If I ever make "Fuck you" money I'm going back to school to get a doctorate in physics because I find the whole thing so fascinating but it doesn't pay to do it. You'd literally make better financial choices just starting a cocaine habit.

yeah it's really fucking stupid how many midwit boomers sit in management doing absolutely nothing but meetings and paperwork dilluting everyone's pay. I moved into machine automation which is at least somewhat recession proof. But even still my next promotion will be around 120k, I'll be wagie till 60. I feel like like it's too late to chase the code meme. Gonna see what happens with ai and crypto

This
And that "fighting" involves pouring over 800 page legal books and knowing about legal speak so you can "well, technically you used this don't on a Monday morning, but per the guidelines set forth in the local charter of 1812, you cannot use religious based iconography on public disaplay, and this chart uses Roman numerals, therefore you must take this down "

EE+Computing senior engineer here in South America making 30k a year. Fuck you americans. I can't fathom how you can't live a life of king there when you make 100k, even if you consider 2x cost of living. Americans are just consumerist shits who can't even cook their own food, or waste everything in hobbies or even worse onlyfans and other subscriptions.

100k here is like 6k a month after tax. A 1 br is 2000/mo in an average city, groceries 300 for 1 person, eating out is 15-20 each time so easily 200 a month. Car will cost you 400-500 including payment fuel and maintenance for a reasonably newish one. Utilities and phone another 250. Insurance for car and apartment about 100. If you have any hobbies or want to travel or vacation, or occasionally buy a cool gadget, new furniture, it might be another 500-1k a month. Now you’re at like 4000-4500 in spending and you got less than 2k to save each month, as a single male. If you have kids you’ll be paycheck to paycheck easy.

I honestly, sincerely, feel like a failure as an engineer. I worked hard for what, $70k? I want to kill myself, I will never be able to afford a family. I literally, not figuratively, make sure the water comes out of people's taps. Like, what else am I supposed to do to be relevant?
>>52776467

im doing my phd in physics because it's the most based of the sciences, but I am going to work in finance once my phd is over because it's the best paying route, plenty of jobs if you do physics though, in industry or academia, and plenty of options if you don't stay in physics because it's very multi-disciplinary, I do a lot of coding for example

Texass.
You thought I was going to say Cali, didn't you? I have a really shitty 1 br 600 sqft apartment and drive a 15 year old Honda. How exactly do you expect me to raise a family on $2k/mo. after expenses?
>live in a trailer park
I have been considering it, I won't lie. But my buddy pays $1200/mo. For a covered RV parking spot, so shit is just fucked any way you slice it.

Literally the same shit OP, but I have a degree in Chem and work for big brother doing nothing related to Chem.
>get a chem degree, there's tons of jobs!
Yeah, but what they don't tell you is that they only wanna hire scientists/chemists with at least 10 years under there belt.
How can I get 10 years if I can't even get 1 year from a willing employer?
Wanna know the worst part about my dilemma? I make less than 3k a month.
>gov benefits are the best!
Yeah but if you're struggling to pay rent, then who gives a shit about some lousy "benefits"? At least you're making money OP. I got fucked on both ends of the stick.

I enjoyed seeing things broken down on a fundamental level to explain various phenomena. But I also expected it to give me job security to some degree, which it did the opposite of.
Majors don't matter. All that matters is who you know and building up a strong resume and getting work experience. That's it.
