most likely bullish. it means europe and certain allies wont buy russian crude unless its 62$ or lower. it will force russia to rely on other countries like india and china. apparently they have been dumping crude onto the market in recent weeks, in addition they have been buying crude oil tankers to be able to transport their oil to other nations and bypass the insurance sanctions

>Most of the major shipping companies and insurers are based in Group of 7 countries. The plan prohibits those companies from handling Russian crude unless the shipment has been sold at or below the price set by the Group of 7. If it is not, they will be held liable for violating sanctions.
>In 2022, operators linked to Russia are suspected to have purchased as many as 29 supertankers — known as VLCCs, very large crude carriers — each capable of carrying more than 2mn barrels, Braemar told the International Energy Agency in a presentation last month. The country is likely to have also added 31 Suezmax-sized tankers capable of carrying about 1mn barrels each, and 49 Aframax tankers that can each haul about 700,000 barrels, it added.
>Russia is still expected to face a lack of tankers and could struggle in the early months of 2023 to maintain its export levels, which would boost prices, analysts say. The shortfall could increase when the EU ban extends to Russian refined fuels in February, Kennedy said. Russia will need access to even more tankers than usual because the length of each journey will be longer; oil that would previously have been sold within Europe will be sent to new buyers in Asia.

imagine if china reopens as less russian crude reaches the market, this could easily happen

Bros, what am I missing with the MSFT buyout of ATVI? Proposed price of $95/share and ATVI is trading around $75. That's over 25% upside for a deal that is almost certain to go through. I know regulators are prepared to block it, but Microsoft wants this deal to go through and are prepared to fight in the legal system. I think it's good for consumers too, as a long time fan of Blizzard games, their teams are not only pozzed but also mostly devoid of talent.

>> No.52729791

The price difference is the idea that there is a very real chance its blocked. If you think about it though whats left as a major game dev in america if atvi is bought by msft? Who is left? The answer will lead you to believe if its blocked. Not the least there was some possible fraud with the ceo of atvi talking to msft people. Didnt go anywhere but could always be a reason the feds block it.

That's a massive delta though, and even in the event it is blocked, it's probably near fair value for ATVI. DragonFlight is actually pretty lit, ngl, and new Diablo game is looking good too and is expected to release Q1 or 2. Kotick is a scumbag, but I don't think that's enough to block the deal entirely. There will still be a few big western developers and tons of indie devs. I don't see what is anti-consumer about this deal, and if anything, Blizzard employee conditions should improve bigly.

Banks have fewer MBS because housing market is slowing. Housing market is slowing because Mortgage rates are higher. But mortgage rates aren't a function of the rate range the fed sets (Interest on Reserves and Reverse Repo Rates). Rather Mortgage rates are a function of 10y yields + extra for default risk. Notice mortgage rates have actually gone down recently and we had an uptick in housing activity because 10y has dropped from 4.2% to 3.7%.

It's psychological because as long as people think fed rating rates = inflation goes down, then the long term treasury market will price in a reduction in inflation. Fed hikes & cuts are a lagging indicator. They hike when inflation is hot, and cut when there's danger of sub 2% inflation. The treasury market is -forward looking- which is why the FOMC and JPow's speeches are more important than actual hikes/cuts. The market looks for forward guidance based on current and expected posture, prices it in, pushes yields around, which has a real effect on the economy.

Hikes/Cuts only affect the short term yields directly, but those aren't the benchmark yields for long term loan originators. This is why we get massive yield curve inversions just before recession. Long term bond market says rates are too high and the short term is just playing repo arbitrage.

The fed doesn't follow cpi as much as it does inflation expectations, this is why you see in their minutes talk about expectations remaining anchored vs becoming unanchored. Expectations actually get priced into long term treasuries, which do affect lending in the real economy.

>There is no personal savings left to expand the economy
Capex isn't fueled by personal savings.
And if you're talking about stock prices and not just economic growth, then personal savings is a meme.
401k is how most people engage with the market, which isn't factored into personal savings.
The people with capital to throw around at stocks definitely aren't at 2.3% personal savings. That number is skewed by the proles who probably don't even have a brokerage.
>Personal savings is rock bottom
COVID stimmies spiked personal savings, zoom out more.
Personal savings also bottomed in Jul 2005.
Bull market continued for 2 more years after that. Weak indicator
>Wages monthly are going up
If this money isn't going to personal savings, where do you think it's going
>inflation has remained steady
this is factually incorrect.
month-over-month numbers are down significantly.
YoY inflation is still high because it includes peak inflation from the first half of the year.
>Unemployment is still below 5%
Also true for 2016 to 2019. S&P +50%
Naïve Phillips curve analysis is a meme, nobody takes that seriously anymore.
If inflation goes down (it has), Fed doesn't give a fuck about unemployment.

We absolutely could see another drawdown, but none of your reasons are particularly compelling.

>Why would you bother expanding when you have no consumers because they have no money?
Not having money never stopped Americans from spending.
Eventually that will blow up, but like I mentioned with 2005, that's hard to time.

Also, capex isn't always about producing more.
If I invest in machinery/robots/AI that makes my workers more productive, then do some "restructuring", profits can still go up. Or I could displace a competitor and increase market share.
The main factor that determines this is the RRR for capital projects. Risk-free rate changes are much more significant factor than consumer demand.
I agree we are probably going to see decreased Capex, I just don't think the PSAVERT has much to do with it.
>I don't know in what world where .4% monthly inflation in a year approaches 2%.
Never said we were at the target, but the point is it's started to downtrend.
Major driver of CPI is energy prices. Ukraine spiked these, and you can't start drilling/adjust grids overnight.
Also, it takes time for market to adjust to Fed.
+0.4% months weren't uncommon even when inflation was low, whereas the +1% ones absolutely were.
If we see m-o-m CPI over 1% again, then yeah. JPOW will absolutely send us to the shadow-realm with rate hikes.

Why would everyone decide to suddenly go on a credit frenzy this year? I talked with a dude that came from China to USA. He was a programmer. He explained to me how work at Alibaba looked like: you have to be in the office 10-12h, otherwise they will move you to another team that is located in some shithole, expecting you to either put up with it or quit. People often slept at the office too. Quality didn't matter, people worked under constant pressure of being replaced.
I'm not surprised that Klaus sees China as a role model for functional society.

I strongly recommend watching documentary called The Behemoth of Greed. It shows the conditions in coal mines in China and how little fucks they give about environmnent and their own people. As a bonus, there are shots of the director I think, and his bare ass. It's for artistic reasons I suppose.

demographic transition. Its why everyone is investing in India this year but their total fertility rate is already below replacement level. After India peaks in terms of GDP growth they will go to some other southeast Asia country (currently Indonesia) or will go to East Africa to Kenya and Rwanda. Rwanda is probably an easy first bet since all the manufacturing can be centralized in the capital because the rest of the country is worthless.
