Can someone explain to me (like I'm retarded) why an etf like VTI is a better choice than just buying 20-30 dividend stocks which I believe will still exist in 20-30 years
My understanding is VTI charges a fee (however small it's greater than zero) and as a total index fund it contains several companies which I do not believe will exist in 20-30 years. Therefore I believe it's a better investment to buy 20-30 "safe" dividend stocks as opposed to buying only VTI
Please again I'm retarded, I'm not trying to swing trades or anything the only goal is hoarding wealth to use when I'm older

So VTI is a small fee in exchange for a guarantee that I don't pick duds? I see the fee is 0.03% So basically 3 pennies on 100 dollars or 30 cents on 1,000 dollars or 3 dollars on 10,000 dollars. So like a cup of coffee...
Is there a greater than 0.03% chance I'm wrong about which stocks to buy? Yeah I suppose there is...
So VTI is the smartest long term investment in the stock market then?
Why the fuck do people buy anything else then?

If you can afford to sit on this board in this general and make trades and follow financial news instead of working a real job, then pick individual stocks. If you can't afford this then just throw it all in index ETF's until you do. Like maybe pick one dividend bearing company to invest in directly, and you better be able to trust them with your life. Nothing lasts forever. Most indeces have a set of requirements for being included and rotating companies in and out constantly. It's effectively a basic algorithm using fundamentals.

People thought US Steel Corp would be around forever in the 90s and 00s, it rotated out of the S&P 500 to be replaced by Tesla. If you feel like you don't want to make a decision when company X is no longer a good investment to company Y, an index will do some basic trading for you because of how they are managed. But as a trade off you won't always get ideal entry points, like how someone holding a Russell 3000 index bought more GME as its price went up or how a S&P 500 holder would have bought TSLA on December 2020.

While I don't disagree with it, it's an interesting way to consider it. SPY therefore, isn't necessarily made up of the best companies, just the biggest. The biggest companies return, in aggregate, 8-10% a year
This implies that fundamentals matter, but that isn't necessarily the case, since it depends on management and other intangible things you can't put a number on

Not just the biggest, I think the most important factor for the success of the S&P 500 is that it only includes companies with positive earnings. It has to rely on discrete fundamentals because it's not actively managed. Intangible factors like people and quality of assets is still a fundamental but not something a passive fund can aim for.

The oil baron crowd speculated about that a few months back but ESG starved the industry of loans already and previous crashes instilled such fiscal discipline that energy production isn't all that sensitive to credit availability.

Other than that, we have a shortage of cars so cutting off auto loans helps there. We have a shortage of homes so cutting off mortgages helps there (look up OER and tear your hair out btw). Forcing people to cut back on credit card usage via 30% interest rates will also throw the recessionary skids on inflation. So rate hikes work, they're just messy.

>We'll have massive foreclosures, and yet they'll keep the stock markets pumping?
Markets have been crashing, which is, per Powell's explicit comments in prepared speeches, also an intended policy result. Reverse wealth effect.

Because the US bailed out the jews in WWII and in return they bail out the dollar so it can bail out the broader world economy, running out of mana to keep the talmudic magic going for much longer though
>Right, but again, they're just inducing a depression. I assume things will spiral out of control quickly since people are already being laid-off. I figured we'd be in a financial nosedive by now; how have we not had a complete collapse yet? When does the pain start?
Midterms mostly, blowing things up during an election week is a great way to start a massive shitfest with no or few rules that gets messy in a hurry. Things will spiral when it becomes clear to the poors that the market isn't just being dumb as fuck and that media push is already getting started. Keeping the proles from completely chimping is about the only reason I personally have to believe that the fed won't go to actual rape-hike levels of 10% or higher within a year or two at most.

Stock picking is hard. The companies you're talking about could also not exist, but more importantly you won't own the next Apple or Tesla. Research shows a small number of stocks contribute to most of the growth in the index. When buying a market cap weighted index like VTI, you are buying the entire stock market for extremely cheap, and will get exposure to a small company no ones ever heard of growing into the next Apple. The point is, the next market leaders will make up the bulk of the gains in VTI, but your portfolio wont them contain them. Look at AT&T, it's done nothing for 25 years. 25 years ago it would absolutely have been an obvious buy, it's a good company right? 97% of active managers fail to the beat the market index.

Basically, yeah. IMO it's been happening, but the jobs data has been cooked to hide it. You can't crank yields like this without really setting off a shitstorm. They've probably overdone it already.

The only slightly optimistic thing to point to is the giant RRP cash pile just sitting there waiting to buy the dip. This plus SLR changes basically means they could force the banks to buy the bond dip and pump stocks in the process. Is that enough firepower to mark the bottom or just tap the brakes who knows.

Nah. You're just fetishizing a fantasized version of what isn't really great in real life.
Girls with autism are just like normal women except you're getting extra social retardation with extra work.
It's not right even if you're also an autist looking for the easy out.

What you should look for is the tomboy girl. She'll be your bro, but with tits and vagina. Also less carrying in that relationship.

>> No.52424762

Under the five-point economic action plan, the Prime Minister will call on fellow leaders to:

Direct government support to where it’s most needed. Using government support effectively to prioritise the most vulnerable, both in our own countries and internationally.

End the weaponisation of food production and distribution. Taking immediate action to support the global food trade to reduce the cost of living for all and save the lives of those at risk of starvation. This includes calling for the Black Sea Grain Initiative to be renewed on 19th November and a G20-wide commitment never to weaponise food production and distribution.

Strengthen our energy security and reduce energy dependence on Russia. We must bring an end Russia’s stranglehold over international energy prices. As part of these efforts we will work with partners to unlock the investment needed to accelerate the green transition – the best way of protecting ourselves from those who have perpetually used hydrocarbons to bully and coerce.

Open up global trade. This includes by advancing bilateral free trade agreements and through reform of the World Trade Organization. We need a WTO fit to release the opportunities of the 21st century while tackling the manipulation of global markets by malign actors.

Providing honest, reliable finance to help developing countries grow sustainably. Ensuring that the international financial system has the firepower needed to help developing countries grow without becoming dependent on their lenders. This includes rapid action to help poor countries better manage their debt burdens and providing an alternative to developing countries borrowing from exploitative sources.

Any mention of memestocks tends to send a portion of smg into a frenzy because it always causes shitfights and increased jeetery. As for why it's going up, probably has something to do with ftx having tokenized shares of stock for the company that were backed by nothing and all those """"shares"""" (all 400,000,000 of them) just disappeared. Because if you want to regulate crypto into nothing, use it to cross contaminate the equities markets and start a crash and piss everyone off royally.

Do NOT short memestocks. You WILL beclown yourself. If you must short them then fucking hedge with longs.

The sad part is I knew not to short memestocks and I did it anyway because I thought this was obviously a bear market rally. I should have waited it out.

Always hedge. Even if it's just barely enough to keep you from roping in the event you're wrong, always fucking hedge. As for your current situation I'd say either bail after the market open dump or buy a long and eat the extra cost for doing it now. Today will almost certainly be another nothingburger for memestocks but there's a real chance it isn't and if not today then in the next few months depending on how far out the can may still be kicked.
