Your criticisms of comparing silver to other rare elements is valid, however the suppressed price of silver has us in a very serious supply crunch as we have not been developing enough silver capacity to meet the needs going forward. So given the demand of silver and the fact that we are sitting on the cusp of all kinds of new technologies as we plow ahead in the digital age, I would argue that silver is extremely rare given the plethora of applications it has. I think the higher pricing that is needed will have entire products simply disappear because they can only be profitably made with silver price suppression. Pair the industrial demand and the trillions of dollars worth of purchasing power floating around looking for a home I can easily see silver surpassing even the most wild-eyed silver bugs forecasts.

As far as escaping inflation that has more to do with currency collapse than anything else. World reserve currencies are cyclical, once it was the british pounr or the franc or whatever the fuck the dutch used. Each lasts abput 90 years and the dollar's deadline is up, but we're in an odd historical situation where as bad as the dollar is, there's no great alternatives, what with china circling the drain and the EU basically being dead.

The problems for silver began when government decreed bimetallism. That is governments pegged their currency to gold AND silver at a fixed ratio. So when the supply and demand for gold and silver moved relative to each other, Gresham's law went into effect and caused one or the other metal to be depleted. The correct answer was to stop pegging the values by law and just let the two metals (and other metals?) circulate freely as money and the market can adjust ratios as needed. In that way, changes in mining or discovery of new deposits of the metals would not matter. The market would just adjust the relative values. What you think of the BRICS doesn't matter. What matters is what the world thinks of a gold-backed currency versus a shit-backed USD. I don't have to like Russia or trust China to use their gold-backed trade currency as long as it is redeemable in metal. And the reason the BRICS are likely to go that direction is because the one thing they all have is gold and a lot of it.
