>Assume they buy a stock at $15, expecting it to go higher, and place a stop loss (a stop sell order which exits the trade) if the price drops to $14.90. The trader buys 3000 shares, because if they lose the $0.10 per share ($15 – $14.90) on 3000 shares, they have only lost $300, or 1% of their account. With a looser stop loss at 14$, he can buy 300 shares at 15$. In both cases he loses 300$ if the stop is triggered. The looser the stop the smaller the profit

How does this make any sense? Changing your stop loss doesn't change your profit in any way only how much you can potentially lose. Why would anyone bother with anything but an infinitesimally small stop loss to prevent losing money at all? I don't get it.

My guess with that is if you set a wide stop loss and then DO NOTHING then eventually, if that order fills, you'll lose out on a lot of profit/loss. Say you bought AA at 66.30 and set a stop at 63. If you did absolutely nothing during that whole pump you'd realize a 3.30/share loss. Similarly if you set a stop for 72 after it initially pumped to 90 you would only realize a 5.70/share profit, when with a tighter stop you'd have gotten a double digit/share profit.

It should be illegal to lie on an /smg/ thread guys.

I have a confession, I've been larping as a retard and getting everyone to buy into this pump, promoting SOXL, posting from different ip's and generally trying to sway the opinions of this general. I bought a few stocks because I'm worried this is the bottom, but im 70% sure we will dump further in the next few months.

In my opinion - in the short term this is a great time to buy and play the bounce but we hit that resistance level, now in the long term this is an awful place to buy.

Please invest responsibility, if you buy and hold here for the next 5 years you will make money. Have a safe and pleasant weekend.

basically you are the one who makes the rules to yourself. no rules = random impulse gambling = not easy to get consistent results. so you need to build a structure for yourself.

There is no money in crypto. Anyone who has blockhain wallet hold exactly that, some collectible tokens. For people who hold crypto to get out of the tokens, there must be a buyer and there is no government entity waiting to exchange it for you.
In other words, it's a zero sum game. For someone to get out of the crypto, there must be a person who chose to get into it instead of stocks.
Kinda weird that people often forget that. Same applies to stocks. The number you see in your account is misleading, as you aren't holding money, just financial instruments.

Now, when a trader doesn't understand market behavior well enough to
know what he is going to do and under what market conditions he is going
to do it—but if at the same time, he is very attracted to the action and the
opportunities he knows exist and if he is also impatient with the learning
process—his impatience and attraction will make him feel compelled to do
something, even if he doesn't know what he should do. How do you think
the typical trader will resolve this dilemma? He will play follow the leader,
rationalizing that everybody else is doing something and, furthermore, all
these people waving their hands and screaming can't be as afraid and
unknowing as himself, so they must know what they are doing or at least they
know more than him. If he does what they do, or better yet, identifies the most
successful trader and does what that trader does, then he too can make money.
This type of rationale creates a herd mentality (extremely prevalent on the floor
of the exchanges), where most everyone is looking for direction, assuming
everyone else must know something they don't, otherwise why would they be
doing anything.

This is interesting. I definitely "have no idea what I am doing", but I also have not been watching anyone, or "educating myself" or all that kind of thing. The situation I have found myself in was my son getting into a stock program as a bonus part of something else, and needing help making his picks. So, I just looked over the list of about 120 edibles, all from the S&P, started looking at interesting ones according to the one number I learned anything about, the P/E, and seeing what their curves looked like at various zooms. His buys were made in Feb 21 and every one of them is up so far, even YTD, despite my seeing that the S&P itself is down YTD, so I figure the method I used was at least half way decent, plus a certain amount of "luck" in the blend. Anyway, I didn't follow any herd nor even a "guru" of any sort, but now I am interested in trying it out some for myself and am seeking a bit of education, etc.

Yes, I have been using the Top Losers list at Google Finance to just check things out periodically and see what I can pick up from the little bit of data and seeing their graphs. My son's program requires relatively long term, he gets to make one sell and buy each year (already done sell/buy, just applied for the 2nd), but I am wanting to get in on some of this "day trading" style action, or something a lot closer to it. I figure there might be some buys I make that I wind up having to wait a while longer than intended and that kind of thing. Anyway, I'm just including this so y'all have an idea of where I'm trying to head. I will be starting out with a very meager sum as I have been not too far from utterly destroyed by life a few times over the decades. I will never sell bussy though no matter how bad it gets.

Well, so far all I have done is pick 2 stocks (son picked one, 3 total), watch them for a year, then pick one of those to sell and another to buy, watched those for a year, now just picked one of those to sell and a new one to buy, and those must all be kept until June when the program ends.

So, I have watched the daily fluctuations on those, and just tried to get a feel for the ebbs/flows and such, which includes keeping panic in check, and that kind of thing. Every now and then I have spotted things in the trending ups and downs outside of those stocks, and I've done a lot of looking at curves at various zooms. That's pretty much it. I have watched some opportunities go by that I knew I would have taken if I had my own account, and they proved out pretty well. I just got the TDA account today to use the paper trading sim. I will need to get a way to fund it, I can't have a bank acct.

Look at the buy price of an ATM straddle. This tells you where the market is expecting the price to move by the expiry date. Then just sell options one or two strikes further from that. Very safe, and depending on the stock might actually be worth a few $$. This is what I'm going to do with my WMT shares from work once I get 100 (currently at 70). >Look at the buy price of an ATM straddle. This tells you where the market is expecting the price to move by the expiry date. Then just sell options one or two strikes further from that.
That's not how options work. Volatility isn't some binary positive/negative range. It's a realm of possibilities, weighted by likelihood.
Selling options at some OTM strike is usually better than setting some GTC sell order at the same strike and waiting to see if it's hit, but setting sell orders like that is pretty inefficient in itself. A more competitive method is to run a trailing stop, and ride any momentum waves as far as it'll take you.
Even if there's a mere 10% chance of a move that takes the stock above your strike, the option is likely so cheap that such a move would send that option flying 1000%. Instead of pocketing $1/share in option premium, you could've used a stop loss to gain an extra $10/share, if not more.
Then there's the fact that options limit you to arbitrary points in time. Oftentimes, partially due to the influence of options activity itself, stocks will experience a big move halfway between monthly options expirations, only to reverse the entire move before the expiration actually happens. The option expires worthless and you collect $1, but you've missed out on a massive move that you could've sold near the top and re-entered off of. Even a GTC order would've caught such a move and given you SOME decent profits.

Of course, you might be content with $1, but even that dollar isn't really free. What you've actually done to your position by selling covered calls is create this asymmetric risk/reward scenario, where you hold unlimited downside risk, but capped upside. Your stocks that become winners will be called away from you, while you'll baghold losers that never quite pay enough premium to justify rolling them.

Don't fuck with covered calls unless you know what you're doing.

but, assuming a position is a winner is stupid. that's literally, causally backwards. so, it's not a very useful phrase or anything. it has no basis in reality. it's just a kind of anecdotal missive.

Selling covered calls (or puts) is actually one of my major strategies, but it's important to understand what you're really doing.
It's not just about skimming some income off the top. It's a bet that whatever you're holding won't move lower. It's really important that you holding has limited risk of going lower. If it goes higher, fine, but if it goes lower you get fucked. Also, selling far OTM calls is generally kind of shit because if you're that confident something will go higher, you'd usually just rather be long. If/when it finally does move, you'll be caught off guard.

>>52373841
You don't have to time it. It's priced in (assuming the option is fairly priced). That's my point. You just set the order and forget and your expected gain will be similar to the option. Difference is, you're no longer tied down to a potentially wide bid/ask spread if you change your mind and wanna close out, like you would be with an option.

I'm sorta surprised there's even this much of a ceiling.

For example if you think the stock will go up sell credit put speads. This means you sell a put then buy a cheaper put that will cover the put you sold in the event your sold put is exercised.

If you are good at trading shares then there is no difference in trading longer dated options except you can make way more money with a bit more risk if there was a major swan event. This is minimized by adding more time, adjusting the strike or dcaing if that happens. Shares would be heemed the same way if the thesis goes the wrong direction but they don't have a time limit on them.

Basically the trick to options is not putting too many eggs in one basket at the same time and even if you were only right 50% of the time you will come out way ahead.

Just start with a $100 budget for options (I would say puts right now) pick a company you think is gonna eat shit and practice trading. Worst case you lose 30-40 bucks and you would be amazed how hard some trades can go in your favor really fast (you don't have to hold to expiry.. I never do)

If you are greedy or retarded tho you should never enable options (honestly you shouldn't be managing your own money at all.. but that's most people)

oh yeah for its just the big money that actually funded alameeda/FTX. SBF gave their own money back to them. the funniest part is the chinese outjewed everybody or CZ/binance is also part of it,likely, they wont even admit where their home base is to avoid any regulations. as far as canada and anyone holding FTT, FTX's rules were very complicated but if you own FTT you essentially own chinks version of stock or the equivalent of an equity NFT like that APEcoin amc bullshit. they specifically made it sketchy so that it would not need to be regulated as a share in the company. super fucking sketchy stuff but after all the different failures thats sequioa and softbank are involved in Im convinced they are "losing" money publicly over and over as a cover for hiding it through intermediaries bc how can they stay in business and convince retards to give them more money

Options should be part of your portfolio but not all of it as well.. set an options budget/start small just incase a nuke goes off in tel aviv or something. But maybe 10-20% of your portfolio once you are good at it. Doing them on directional trades on etfs is incredibly easy and much safer than picking a single ticker

YOu know you can write covered calls on things that arent extremely volatile right, and you dont have to write 1000 worth if you have 1000 shares. You can do a small amount.

You can write CCs at the peak if you want to continue holding but think it will go down. CCs are based. My family member has 20000 shares of CNQ from work and could make bank selling CCs on 1000 at a time, slowly getting assigned and selling for retirement

Buying a call option limits your loss to the premium of the contract price. So, if you buy 1 contract for $50 premium, then your max loss is only that $50 even if the stock price went to $0.

People will buy stupid amounts and sell ridiculous contracts. Thats what ruins them. No risk management, they would lose that much by just trading shares too. It just might take them a little longer to lose it all.

And if the "priced in" move doesn't happen then you're better with premium. If you want to be a swing trader fine, but don't knock basic theta gang strategies if they don't work for you. If you can sense when a trend is running out of steam but not necessarily reversing then they can work well for you.
You seem to be approaching the whole subject as somebody who's mad they "missed out" or is constantly picking stocks that go flying in which case swing trading is better for you.

No, that's a put.
If you buy a call, that's the same as going long. You want price to go up.
If you buy a put, it's like shorting and you want the price to go down. People buy puts as downside protection, and you don't have to deal with margin requirements.

Now if you write calls and puts on the other hand...

Selling covered calls is different than buying calls, like I mentioned. By selling covered calls, you are giving the buyer the option to purchase your shares from you at the strike price.

Dividends are (basically) profit sharing from the company. Your shares are not at risk of being sold to another party.

he is glossing over alot, the best buys for stock is at support and the best sell is at resistance for options the most expensive buys are at support because thats the obvious play, but wait a moment or two longer right when it absolutely is about to fail or not and you get a great price but more risk. however if you buy on the way down near the bottom you can get calls at a good deal bc sellers want to get filled and you can be more demanding with your bid. when you go to sell them if you are OTM trying to sell at top will be less money then if you are selling OTM calls that are still on the way up bc the implied volatility is almost always higher than the realized volatility, UNLESS you are correct on the price action and you go ITM or theta has decayed so much and IV jumps way more to cover it. there are lots of little intricacies that make them different. for example the other day on the 2% move up during the end of october you could have bought 400c that were far OTM be up 200% by end of morning down 50% by mid day compared to the monring but still up 20% from the previous days buying but by the eod of the day when you were at 380's IV dropped even though it was 2% up and those very same options were only +25%.

stay away from options until you can trade equities. make a trading journal even of things you arent yet invested in and track them over time. how do you feel about it after todays movement, next week, a month later. etc. that will help you realize what is and isnt "real" also news is more of an excuse for things to head a certain direction anyway. get good it'll seem like the world is conspiring to make you money.
