Trying to either get into investment banking or big 4. Currently about to complete my double major in finance and economics.

You're going to put in 100+ hour weeks for 4 years making $150k/year but spending every dime to live in NYC, you'll finally get promoted and start making good money and meet a girl. She will be from Westchester and will expect a life like the one she had growing up. You will continue to work but not be able to save as much as you thought and you'll tell yourself that you like your job anyway.

Shell get pregnant and you'll move out of the city and buy a house near her parents in Westchester. The house will be a stretch and will eat all your savings to buy. But it's in a great area and you'll save on a nanny for the kids since her parents are close.

You'll keep working. The kids need to go to private schools, after all. And her parents put you guys up for membership at the country club!

All of a sudden, you're 50 and it's time for John and Jane to go to college. They got accepted at Davidson and Vassar! So you tap your savings to send them.

You will retire after you get them through college! Johnny takes 5 years to graduate ($500k) and Jane takes a year after college to go to Europe ($500k). Your wife decides she doesn't want a partner that works all the time now that you're an empty nest, and takes half of the house ($1.5m).

You get to retire at 60 with $1.5m and a $500k 401(k). Congratulations.

This is pretty accurate, as someone who has first hand experience with NYC culture (pre-pandemic).

This. At least in ibanking you can make a ton of cash in your first years and before bailing to industry. Good luck getting a chance straight out of college, you will need some connections to get in. Big4 can be similar hours but much longer grind until you get comfy exit opps.
