So, I teach money and banking at a regional public university and today was the first day I taught about cryptocurrency. I think the whole thing is fascinating, although I'm 100% against the idea that it's some revolutionary tech. At best, it's the equivalent of inventing a better debit card. At it's worst, it's a devolution in technology which wastes energy and human brainpower.

Although I am a hater, I'm still cognizant of the fact that if everyone chooses to use bitcoin or some other crytpo, then bam...that's our new currency. This is the pot of gold investors are seeking. They pretty much know that the technology is about as revolutionary as a tootsie roll, but they don't care because with money as a medium of exchange, all that matters is that people decide to use it as their primary medium of exchange. Hell, we've used sea shells and massive round stones as money before, so there's that. It's a self-fulfilling kind of thing, and there is still a non-zero chance that humanity is really stupid enough to buy into this.

So, I'm still wondering and still a little worried about all about this, up until today. Today, I'm super-excited to teach everything I've learned about crypto up to this point. How it's basically just a ledger, like an excel file with accounting info, and that you can write new entries but not delete anything. This whole thing was even couched in how we are evolving toward less involvement of banks in the payments system. And up to today, these students had been really interested in what I was teaching. I was doing okay, but really the class was good because they were wanting to know more about what I was teaching. That is until I started teaching about crypto. These kids' eyes just glazed over as if I was their drunk uncle ranting about Biden on Christmas eve. I honestly tried to explain the "cool" parts of the technology, The peer-to-peer aspects, how it was file sharing. I could see in their eyes, it was as if I was just re-traumatizing them all somehow.

So that's it. That's my story. This is how I know bitcoin and probably all crytpo is dead. It's a middle-aged, get-rich-quick pipe dream and these kids are simply not having it. I feel dirty for even trying to treat it as if it's something relevant or with potential. I probably hurt my own credibility just trying to teach it for 15 minutes. I can't imagine how these San-Fran silicon valley freaks are doing. Those kids are super smart and savvy out there. The prof's trying to have a class on this are likely seen as the whores of their institutions by the student body. There's not a doubt in my mind after today.

I think Crypto (God I hate that term) has potential or at least had potential initially. But you're right, morons with GED and delusions of grandeur perfectly describes your average buttcoiner. Actually it's even worse than that now r/bitcoin has been overrun with morons from 3rd world country with no financial education at all who've been sold the crock of shit that crypto is the magic pill that will solve all problems and remove all inequality or something like that. In the early days though it did seem to have potential as well as problems of course, but it's been completely overrun by the hype. t seems unlikely. The thing about a scam like crypto is that there is a saturation point—a point where everyone who was going to fall for the scam has heard, considered and either bought in, rejected or couldn't be bothered to dive in.

It seems really unlikely that you could get more awareness than they have—crypto is every other YouTube ad (so I have heard from boomer friends who don't use adblock) and has been in the Superbowl, major sports leagues, damn near every television channel and low tier news outlet.

Combine that with the fact that the last boom happened during a pandemic (lots of bored people) at the same time a massive number of stimulus cheques went out (money to burn, including for people who don't usually have it) and it seems incredibly unlikely that it could ever get a storm that perfect for success again.

The very structure of blockchain serves its one actual purpose: to scam people out of money. It forces people being scammed to waste processing power verifying the existence of the scam infrastructure.

But as a monetary technology it's garbage. Criminal activity is both completely out in the open and completely non-reversible (which should tell you something about who really controls the ledger - if it was the people, it should have the most secure and reversible infrastructure on earth, but actually the people need to watch the ledger helplessly as their crypto flies into a criminal's pockets). It's SLOW: so ungodly, unthinkably and inexcusably slow relative to traditional payment methods. On top of that, it wastes vast amounts of processing power by design.

But its greatest crime is the fact that it pins itself to this wasted processing power: cryptocurrency never represented real economic activity by design. This makes it a Ponzi scheme by design. The value of cryptocurrency always came from lost value in upstream economies. It's like an economy based entirely around banking but without any physical, meaningful activity for the banking system to be based upon.

Imagine buying a burger at a drive through with Bitcoin. You'd have to renegotiate the price because of the currency fluctuations on your way to the window. Bitcoin can handle six transactions per second worldwide, so you'd be in line so long, you'd need to microwave the burger when you got it home. And the fees would be ridiculously high, because of the 400 kg of CO2 released from crypto-bro datacenters to support the transaction. Compare that to the 4 kg of CO2 released by the food industry to create the burger itself.

In your next lecture, at least point out that a currency and a speculative investment are antonyms. Baseball cards, Beanie Babies, and Bitcoin are speculative investments. Bitcoin was not designed to be a speculative investment, but it turned into one because of its bad design. Currency speculation accounts for 98.7% of all Bitcoin transactions. Calling Bitcoin a currency is an insult to the seashells and round rocks that didn't introduce these ridiculous problems.

I had that exact same epiphany earlier this year. I read somewhere that blockchain was basically a append only database. So, I did some digging and learned that append only databases are used all the time in finance with WORM storage technology (write once read multiple time). So, why not just have a centralized institution that manages transaction because you can't really use the Bitcoin or any crypto without a connection to the internet? You could have regulations and overseeing 3rd parties. Just like our banking system. Sending money on the internet is often brought up but problem was solved a long time ago.

Then it dawned on me. This only makes sense if you believe that you can't trust banks with your money or are just try to make a buck on a ponzi scheme. Banks are heavily regulated and my account is protected by the FDIC. So, you have to be dumb or a fraud. There really is no other position.
