You need to understand some history. About forty years ago, the American gun ban architects developed a "divide and conquer" strategy. Josh Sugarmann, a professional gun ban activist, came up with the idea of isolating what was then a very small, niche group of owners of semi-automatic rifles with cosmetic features similar to some military full-auto rifles. Sugarmann applied the technically incorrect, but scary, term "assault rifle" and with the assistance of the usual suspects, began a ban campaign. At that time, AR-15s and semi-auto AK-47s were very unusual. So the attack led to a ban on those rifles and some other scary looking rifles, first in California and then at the national level during the Clinton administration.

But Sugarmann's plan backfired. First of all, there was a devastating backlash against the Democrats at the national level. And there is what may be a peculiarly American attitude that if the government doesn't want me to have something, I probably should have one. And so gun owner interest in the banned weapons was stimulated. The rifle ban at the national level had a sunset clause that caused it to expire after ten years. And nobody in Washington was interested in having another blood bath trying to get it reinstated. And so the AR-15 and similar rifles became legal again. But now the public had been made aware of these formerly niche weapons and stampeded to get one and discovered that they were pretty neat. That formerly minor interest in military-style rifles that Sugarmann has hoped to isolate had been fanned into a conflagration by the ban.

And so it was the attempt to ban the AR-15 that turned it into the most popular rifle in America.
