I just found out half of Americans' amazingly high salaries is RSU

Yeah those 500k netflix job is like 150k cash 350k RSU

>> No.51151891

I worked at an american corporation in bongland, and they set up one of these RSU schemes for me too, but it was like a bonus rather than part of my salary, and it sounded good but turned out to be a laugh.

If you leave the company you lose most of it and it never actually gets paid to you. I left and got a third of what I'd supposedly accumulated in RSU. One third of american salaries is fake news, unless you stay working there for over 5 years (I cant see how they could abuse that!)

Also reeks of desperation to keep inflating the share price

its some extremely jewish program they called the long term incentive scheme on the UK side (>>51151891), where you get your salary paid in company stock, that you cant touch for 3 or 4 years, and gets paid out in little chunks slowly, and if you leave the company, they stop paying it. So in order to get your full 100K salary, you have to work there for 3 or 4 full years before you got your year 1 salary. Now you gotta keep working for that 4th year!

I'm also told it all goes into their 401K which they cant touch till they're 60 too. These niggas are never getting their money!

yeah when software trannys talk say "TC" it means they aren't getting paid shit
the real salary is still over six figures, but at least until recently that meant you had to live in the most congested overpriced and high-tax cities to achieve it

also you chuds have to realize that normal men and mentally ill youtube roasties lie about everything
they lie about their income, they lie about their sexual prowess, they lie about their height

>> No.51154590

Yeah, RSU's suck.

I work for a startup here in Portugal, salary is 130k€ in cash but then you get like 200k in stock options (similar to RSU's but worse since you have to wait until the company IPO's). I'm never counting on that money at all.

Very common. It's how FANG employees make such ridiculously high "salaries". If you ever talk to them, they will refer to their pay as "total compensation" because their salaries, i.e. actual gross pay in USD, is not the same as everything including stocks, etc.

It's not a bad idea in theory, even for Europe. Because here in Europe there are usually different tax brackets for income tax.

So if you are going to pay 50+% on everything over say 100k, it actually might be better tax wise to just take the stock options and pay ~30% capital gains tax instead.

But the problem is the 'vesting period'. It's set up obviously because people job hop, and so will punish them financially for doing so. Employers aren't stupid, if they know the average tenure in tech jobs is two years and some change, they're going to set the incentives such that only the people that make it to year 4-5 (statistically small) will actually get the money.

But the elephant in the room as to why European salaries are lower compared to the US because all the European countries micromanage things like paid leave. Employer has to give you a shitload of paid days off, which contrary to what morons believe isn't 'free', the companies just don't pay as much wages as they would have if you just had a small amount of paid days.

RSU is also a great way for the company to write down salary. They are paying stock today that you can't cash for 5 years. And in many cases, if you leave the company early, you don't get the full pay out. Sometimes you have a 5 year employment contract. You can leave, but you are breaking a contract. The company can also write down the "free" goyslop they offer in the break room and cafeteria. It's included in your TC but is written off as a corporate expense.

it's even funnier when it's a pre-IPO scam and they never go public and lay everyone off (i interviewed at one such company, GoPuff) or funding dilutes the shares until they're worth effectively nothing. many such cases!

>> No.51155106

>>51151891
this. Worked for many US corps in tech, it's all bullshit and if you leave you often even lose the options that should have been awarded to you. Just calculate without it to see if you can make it work and tell your recruiter this too. Often it turns out with just the cold cash it is hardly an improvement with cost of living in tech cities like SF or Austin etc.

And what is the opportunity cost of me staying at that salary for four years until I can vest? And I'm not saying that for some specialist knowledge that's high in demand you can escape that cost of living vicious cycle -you can and then the US is big fucking money. But that's for <2% of tech jobs out there like negotiator at Google. For the vast majority of devs and engineers being lured to the US it's a fucking rude awakening in a spic/nigger infested apartment complex in Fremont while you say SF to your friends back home.

Stock options used to be more common for experienced line workers, but they stop doing it because they removed the tax incentives
RSUs are better for the workers anyway because even when the stocks shit the bed, they don’t expire worthless
