I am recovering from a work accident and I have the week off. Yesterday I played a video games all day. My friend who is a "software engineer" joined me while he was on the clock. He tells me he does this every single day. He makes almost twice as much money as I do in HVAC. How is this even sustainable? How are companies paying people hundreds of thousands of dollars to do nothing all day?

Software Engineer here. The demand for good engineers is so high that they let engineers get away with it as long as you deliver when its needed. So basically you just have to be available when its needed (outage, new feature or bug fix needs to be fixed asap etc) and do you work in general and no one cares.

getting paid for knowledge vs getting paid for time
devs get paid to fix bugs and implement new features. sometimes a dev is required to attend a meeting or meet with a client. if a dev is doing all of the above then most managers won't micromanage them.

its very sustainable. you dont understand just how few people are willing to THINK for a living (your friend) vs how many people want to spend their life doing dumb labor (you). youre disposable. your friend isnt.
