Hey bros I have a ton of old ass collectible and antique items.

Now I’m a poorfag but my family of old was very wealthy and that’s how I acquired these pieces. My question to you guys is how about would I go to sell some of these?

How do I get them properly appraised, what websites should I go to get them sold, ideally get the most out of it as I can.
>why would you sell your family heirlooms?
Because my grandparents were multi-millionaires that literally squandered all their wealth. I was supposed to inherit a 5million dollar stock portfolio and it disappeared after their 5th business starting attempt. They were loved but extremely foolish with their financial choices. I have the opportunity now to reignite my families generational wealth. Any help bros?

I’m gonna post various pieces as tribute for your help today, enjoy!

Starting off with a thick ass piece of 18k gold, this I can easily sell but won’t for a long time as it’s extremely precious to me.

Amazing thread.

I am actually an antique dealer and deal in a variety of antiques and collectables. Just woke up and saw this thread. Not sure how to contact you safely here- it would be fairly easy to assess values if I get a general idea of the collections/estates contents.

Please let me know and this would be an interesting challenge

It’s either a replica of the Codex Manesse (15th century piece) or it’s the original which was stolen from the Nazis I believe. Most of my family was in Germany and I did have family that participated in warfare during the early 20th century

Basically there is no easy answer to getting a proper valuation and selling for 'the right price'.

If you can afford to wait a long period and be very considered with your sales you have less of a chance of letting something go to cheaply.

Otherwise you could chuck everything in auction houses to sell quick and get the money (starting with Sothebys/Christies/Bonhams and then working your way down the scale of lesser auction houses to get rid of the stuff s/c/b won't take).

But even in the case of S/C/B you are not guaranteed to get the best price.

You cannot trust any expert opinion or auction house 100 percent and value is malleable. The task is for you to know for yourself, but that is not 100 percent reliable either. When consulting with other people you have to think about their incentives too. Another dealer will want to give a low valuation so its cheaper for them yo buy from you. An auction house will give a low estimate because they would rather your item sells than fails to sell with a high estimate. Not to mention and auction/dealer can just be wrong yet they state the incorrect valuation with certainty (very common!).

np sir. Would be cool to figure out the artists for the ivory figures (signatures should be artist or workshop names). You might have some luck googling 'japanese ivory okimono signature artists' or something and comparing the signatures to the ones on your figures.

In terms of Ivory and even Japanese antiques to some extent, the market is not great at the moment (though Japanese antiques are starting to show some signs of life recently). I like to collect Japanese antiques, I hold onto my ivory but it is pretty much illegal to buy or sell it in my country so I stick to what I have already. I have hope that in the future rationality can return to ivory legislation.

If you have any Chinese porcelain I can help you out with a valuation. I know a bit about Japanese ceramics too.

Even just 5-10 years ago in the UK the ivory market was brilliant. An ivory snooker ball was £100-£150 each, it then dropped to around £15-£35 an ivory snooker ball and now it is pretty much illegal to buy or sell them. It was almost 100 percent Chinese people buying them. Just to give some idea of how the ivory market is. Though in countries with a more loose ivory policy the prices will be different, the trouble with exporting/importing ivory means that prices can vary a lot from country to country.

Easiest route catawiki

Second route is asking for multiple appraisals with just a few items, choose the guy with the best rep and highest offer. Next time sell to the guy with the second highest offer.

Never show your full collection, keep them in the unknown how much you have. Try to research your stuff as much as possible but pretend to be in the unknown, that way you can check if they try to bs you.

You can go to musea and ask them if they can identify a piece.

Pro-tip, dont post your collection here, dont sell to anyone on 4chin.

This is good advice

Get an appraisal on one of your ivory statues by an auction house. Shit, I’d simply take one to auction and see what the market is like. Markets fluctuate over time. Sometimes items are fashionable or popularized by movies/tv and demand increases only to wane as time goes on. There’s a lot to consider but if you want some spending money then try selling a few items at a time and see how much you can get.

Not a bad idea, I wouldn't trust an auction house 100 percent though. Especially a small auction house, there word rarely means much. Most of the buyers at small auction houses are dealers looking to make a profit, it is possible you sell something for $50 that goes on to sell for $3000. Though it is also possible you sell that same thing for $4000 at the auction. So there is a bit of gamble there. But yes, you might as well show it to an auction house to get a free appraisal, but don't feel pressured to enter it to auction and don't believe them when they say the item will definitely sell for a good price.

Catawiki is an interesting blue between a traditional auction house and ebay. I don't have much experience with them, but there experts do often give the thumbs up to reproductions so they are certainly not foolproof. Not to say it wouldn't be a good option necessarily.

Those are from my great grandfather on my grandmas side, he fought in WW2, his story is pretty wild.

He was in the Philippines (I believe) at the time Japan attacked the US and also begun an invasion there, he was captured and was a POW for a time being. He escaped by hiding in the sewage system for 10 days underneath the prison during which he lost his sense of smell. Afterwards he couldn’t leave so he decided to work with local forces in the area to disrupting communications the Japanese were running and essentially led a band of men in sabotaging Japanese military operations stationed there. Eventually he was able to actually take back the prison that held him and became a hero, dude was a badass. A lot of these items were purchased by him as well, he had lots of connections with underground groups throughout his life and was very sketchy.

Here is a small set of either dining utensils or dining utensils that were actually weapons for assassins, probably just a dining set.

Also only working from pictures of course, would want to handle to verify the material etc. The two ladies should be carved from one piece of ivory I would think? (rather than multiple pieces attached).

Japanese travelling set of knife and chopsticks in case I think. Though one of the 'chopsticks' has a sharp implement ending so I am not sure. Maybe assassins tool like you say.

Really? That’s something got any photos?

This painting is odd because I know it’s vintage (been around 100 years) however I cannot identify the signature or name of the piece because the signature seems to be missing (the piece is damaged), and the title is backwards, upside down, and faded on the back of it. Really hard to identify at all.

If that pottery is from the Mississippian culture then it is extremely rare and sometimes prehistoric. Not many photos exist except in the visitors center at the mound sites.

They are very similar to Mayan art and are likely distantly related.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos and no longer own my pieces.

I am an antique collector myself.

This is a painting from a Peruvian artist in the 1900s, he was one of the notable artists at the time I wish I could remember his name. A similar size piece but different sold for $5,000, so nothing special but still a nice piece of artwork.
