Hey guys before we get into this thread, I want to talk about /smg/'s sponsor for this evening: Direxion Leverage ETFs is a provider of financial products for investors who want more than the status quo. The company has approximately $30.8 billion in assets under management and their index-based products deliver directional options, magnified exposure, and long-term, rules-based strategies. Direxion's Leveraged and Inverse ETFs provide opportunities for traders to magnify short term perspectives with daily 3X and 2X leverage, utilize bull and bear funds for both sides of the trade, and trade through rapidly changing markets. Their Strategic & Thematic ETFs help buy-and-hold investors achieve long-term outperformance when compared to passive indexes, while seeking more specific objectives such as higher income, enhanced diversification, reduced volatility, excess returns, and more. Their role is to complement your core investment strategies, not to replace them. Their funds allow you to seek opportunities in all market conditions offering fresh solutions to challenge old standards. At Direxion, they are focused on your success. They continuously strive to provide you with the innovative products, consistent performance, and on-the-ground support to help you to take advantage of opportunities, execute your strategies, deliver for your clients, and grow your business-regardless of market conditions.

Now, back to the thread!

Second order greeks can sometimes be important but sometimes not really important for retail traders trading in small size.

They do get really important for everyone in tails events though. The tails on options (~20 delta or lower) barely have any gamma exposure or delta or vega. The risk exposure is mostly coming from second/third order greek exposures.

I can explain a bit more about this sort of stuff in laymans terms if people want, but usually it turns people off. It can be very interesting tho.

The most practical in this Medium article I will post below are vanna and vomma (also known as volga).

But I would strongly caution against looking too much into any third-order Greeks. Quite arguably, the third orders only have implications for market makers to manage their own inventory.

This is a really nice informative post on second and third order Greeks: https://medium.com/hypervolatility/options-greeks-vanna-charm-vomma-dvegadtime-77d35c4db85c

The most practical in that Medium article are vanna and vomma (also known as volga that i meme about with my dumb Hidden Tiger gimmick). But not really that practical either, they just help you understand whats going on a bit but not trade on it.

all trading involves a entry and an exit. you must know when to long, and when to short. because markets trend upwards, its better to hold long term, but you wont make any money doing that. therefore I have reached the conclusion that shorting, especially in bull markets, is true trading, while longing is just investing with leverage.

Yeah. It's not as much as I normally make on the long side because I take profits very fast on shorts due to only trading leveraged indexes, market buoyancy being a risk factor. So even in a protracted bear market I will make less on shorting than I would on trend of similar length going long.

Also I had this thought:

>At the time of the 1973 oil crisis, the price of corn and wheat went up by a factor of three.
>During the 2000s, the price of Brent Crude rose above $30 a barrel in 2003 before peaking at $147.30 in July 2008. With the onset of the Great Recession, reduced demand for oil caused the price to fall to $39 per barrel in December 2008.[4]
>The 2007–08 world food price crisis saw corn, wheat, and rice go up by a factor of three when measured in US dollars.

So if you adjust for inflation, $147.30 in today's money is approx $198.85. We haven't hit that level on crude oil. However, if you use fibonacci retracement (0.618 levels) then you get $122.89. This is remarkably close to the peak over the last 3 months - Mar 8th had futures close at $123.70, less than a 0.7% margin of error. Unless it shoots up again, I think the price will crab or drift downwards.

god it feels soooooo fucking good to think about what those smug exuberant bobos who were calling a new paradigm and selling this blatant bottom are feeling right now. they must be biting their nails, ripping their hair out, staring at their deep red folios losing thousands and thousands of dollars, in a cold sweat trying to buy back their shorts but unable to, they are still thinking, what if we dump next week? surely the fed won't pivot! so they won't buy back their shorts. and they'll keep hoping they break even on their SPY puts with a sky high cost basis. they'll keep HODLing, and they'll tell themselves "Heh, it's just a matter of time before the market takes a fat shit. This bubble can't keep going!". but deep down they know, they did this to themselves. they fell for obvious tricks and were easily manipulated. they lost all their money FOMOing and will live as slaves all their lives as a consequence. they'll hold their triple leveraged inverse ETFs until they're penny stocks or get liquidated. some of them won't be able to stand the humiliation and will end their lives. others will become lifelong drug addicts or develop chronic mental illnesses. they will go bald and develop ulcers. but i don't feel bad for them. after all if they weren't so greedy, this wouldn't have happened to them. and we warned them, oh, we warned them so many times. but they didn't listen. so i think of them, and laugh. i laugh and laugh at their misfortune. and at all the money i am making off their backs. thank you, you dumb, gullible bears, for entertaining us and helping us make more money as the world *gasp* doesn't collapse around us and absolutely fucking nothing happens. i look forward to letting my short puts expire worthless, thanks for the premies losers!

I shorted crypto shitcoins since like Nov 2021 and made some good gains with 1.5-2x leverage, you just gotta be patient go balls deep and wait. I got lucky because with a bag of shitcoins I caught LUNA for nearly 80% and used all that to short gain and everything dumped. More than doubled my crypto money and I kept it this far at least and I'm out.

Not shorting now though, not as clear and it's only good when the market gives you free money because of the significant risk, when it's not free and easy to tell, say by normalfags and so on, I just long, not a shorting kind of guy myself. I'm just accumulating stuff now.

I briefly had shorts in TSLA and GME as well but I had a stronger long idea long term so I rotated the money. Was down like 50% on TSLA because I shorted at around $850 and it went to $1200, waited until it went around and exited because I already wanted to rotate and realized it was gonna take a long time and my money would be better employed. Made 50% on GME and exited.

Not I'm using the gains to invest long term since I have more ideas and leverage now

It's this paper.
>What are the consequences of widespread ESG-based portfolio exclusions on the expected returns of firms subject to exclusion? We consider two possible theoretical explanations. 1) Short-term price pressure around the exclusions leading to correction of mispricing going forward. 2) Long term changes in required returns. We use the exclusions of Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG -`The Oil Fund') to investigate. GPFG is the world's largest SWF, and its ESG decisions are used as a model for many institutional investors. We construct various portfolios representing the GPFG exclusions. We find that these portfolios have significant superior performance (alpha) relative to a Fama-French five factor model. The sheer magnitude of these excess returns (5\% in annual terms) leads us to conclude that short-term price pressure can not be the only explanation for our results, the excluded firms expected returns must be higher in the longer term.
5% a year is a lot of Fama-French five factor alpha.
