An allowance is fine to incentivize taking responsibility of their own space though. Almost all the parents in my neighborhood developed the same allowance system. If the kids room wasn't clean and tidy by saturday, they wouldn't get an allowance and had to watch all the other kids go out and buy candy and shit.
