To take U.S. fringe movements as an example (The alt-right, BLM, antifa and GMEcucks - regardless of your opinion of these movements, they are outside the mainstream), you'll find that they have some interesting similarities to how religious groups work. Like religious groups, though not inherently religious themselves, they tend to:

1) Dislike answering hard questions: "sneed", "pajeet"

2) Use persecution as justification for their ideology

3) Make claims of being a victim of some vague entity which supposedly has enormous power over their lives. For the religious it's God/Satan. For BLM it's white supremacy. For Antifa it's capitalism/facism. For the alt-right it's Jews/immigrants. For GMEtards it's Kenny and the evil ledgies shorting fledgling businesses into extinction.

4) Value loyalty above most anything else. Just as leaving Islam sometimes means death, and leaving Christianity means being an unpardonable sinner, leaving these fringe groups makes you a target. Leaving the alt-right makes you a "cuck". Leaving BLM makes you an "Uncle-Tom". Leaving Antifa makes you racist/misogynist/etc. Solding your shares makes you a sneed/shill.

5) Have a set of core beliefs that you must hold onto dogmatically to be considered an insider. Stray to far from these beliefs, and you risk the equivalent of excommunication.

6) Claim moral superiority. To disagree means to be immoral and evil, thus justifying violence.
