Well, yes. I have a family, so if I make fresh bread (not baguettes admittedly) it's gone within a day or two. I don't find walking at all unpleasant. It's simply far better from a time perspective to buy groceries on a weekly or even monthly basis, the way most Americans do. Even if a trip takes an hour, you probably end up saving more time than if you were to buy your food every day or two.

I do. Most fresh produce stays good up to a week in the fridge. Frozen stays good for months, and has the benefit of having more nutrients, being fresher (since it's frozen when it's picked) and being cheaper. Applies to both fruits and vegetables. I'm on a budget so I tend to go for frozen fruits and vegetables, though I will also buy fresh. Stuff like onions, potatoes, etc. will last a lot longer. It's not as hard as you think. It just takes a little planning.

Anon, walking to the bakery is a pleasure in life. Food is culture. It's not a strict measure of efficiency or something similar. Do you watch TV? Oof that's inefficient too, no fun allowed. I also have the option to do large shopping trips and do, but I buy fresh produce and bread as often as possible.

>> No.49974329

>>49974217

Why can't it be both? I don't judge people who like to go to a bakery. That in fact is a good thing. I have done the same thing, though it's not a regular habit of mind. Just because my food pleasure doesn't involve a five minute walk to the bakery, butcher, or otherwise, doesn't mean I try to min/max every aspect of life for maximum efficiency and suck the fun out of everything. For me, saving money on food is a source of pleasure, and the meals I cook at home (even using frozen ingredients) are delicious. That said, I still go out to eat at various restaurants, and yes, on occasion I've been known to frequent the McDonald's drive thru (though that's not often, maybe once a month).

i would say most people don't. most peple i know would buy a bunch each week, like 5 baguettes, cut them in half and put them in the freezer. some people can buy one everyday, it really depends but it's becoming a "lost" trend

pic is half of a baguette from my freezer

>I do.
no, you really do not. Your reply makes it painfully obvious. Frozen vegetables, while nutritionally equivalent to fresh veggies, have terrible texture because ice crystals rapture the cell walls. Most fresh produce loses taste and texture after 3 or 4 days in the fridge (depends really on what it is ..), regardless of whether or not it's still good to eat.
people who eat lots of produce eat lots of salads and raw veggies and therefore care about things like texture - what you on the other hand describe is the world view of someone who eats overcooked slob.

The thread was originally asking how French people have time do go to the bakery every day. The answer is that for things that matter to you, you can make time. A lot of people in the world view food as indispensable culture, but some do not which is why OP is asking, presumably. There's also the infrastructure angle, hence OP saying it would take him 30 minutes for a trip to the bakery. I also enjoy cooking and living frugally, it's simple enough for anyone to do as well.
