Record profits that aren't adjusted for inflation. They're basically just breaking even for the lost decade of the 2010s when Obongo tried to put them out of business. This is an inflationary issue caused by too much money printing that flooded an economic with limits to growth. That money has to go somewhere which is always higher prices by the goods and services that already exist in the economy. Oh yeah, they also fucked with the Russians and absolutely fucked up the entire market and there is no equilibrium to be found anytime soon.

anons replying to the above questions are completely missing the point. We are asking why oil companies are capable of making record profits. Responses to these questions seem to think we are asking how oil prices could go up--- it's obvious how they can with supply chain issues and sanctions. What I and these above questions are remarking on is how oil companies are making record PROFITS. They are not simply raising gas prices to cover higher overhead and costs, so they can continue to make the same margins of profit as before--- they are raising gas prices to cover those things AS WELL AS make record windfall profits. If people don't understand this distinction, think it through for a bit before replying

>> No.49659627

At the start of Covid oil prices dropped a lot the oil companies laid off quite a lot of people as well as stopped drilling, exploring new wells and R&D. Compound this with inflation reaching decades-long highs, the Biden administration making it more difficult to drill and finally the conflict in Ukraine (although oil prices were surging long before this happened and Biden tries to emphasize this far more than it deserves). Voila extremely expensive oil.

The biggest criticism of them would be that they didn't re-hire people and re-start drilling and R&D projects soon enough as we came out of the Covid recession; however remember that oil companies are by their very nature very conservative and risk-averse, they couldn't guarantee that demand would return and oil projects take months to years to complete.
