So your view is biased in a very important manner that you have to understand right now so you can reevaluate your understanding of these things: in 2000, there was a sector-specific tech crash. Nasdump is mostly tech. This is why in this very specific scenario it took longer for it to recover. Actually the important part here is really that it ONLY took 2 years longer to recover DESPITE this and despite how s&p became much more tech heavy later on (i.e. captured a wide part of the gains without so much as the loss).
