I'm currently in debate with someone about this.
see picrel
Does the top or bottom diagram describe how BARTs actually work?

In a bear market, every pump is just a short squeeze (aka bart). That's all you need to know.

How is the squeeze initiated?
How does the price maintain a plateau after the pump?
A lot missing from your explanation

no one actually knows, do they?

blows my mind to think how many ways we're being screwed over while being none the wiser

>how come both my theories were wrong
Because your missing something called “margin” trading.

Why do I know exactly what's going to happen but won't even try to make any money watching it happen? I can only hold. I have usd loaded in to buy every time and I never sell when it starts to crab every single time

market maker starts a big pump by buying enough to force a breakout on a long standing resistance and helps it gain traction with more high volume buys along the way when the pump starts threatening to reverse
retail hops on and the pump keeps going a while
when the market maker stops propping the price up it kinda flatlines as volume dries up and people are confused and not sure whether to buy or sell
meanwhile whale starts offloading some of the tokens they bought 5 - 10% cheaper little by little as the market makes little bart peaks, contributing to the flat bart top as the guy who just bought a huge amount of tokens acts as the hard resistance to the large move up he started himself
then finally as he sees that the support is starting to crumble without his artificially propping it up he starts selling off en masse at the first signs of the price starting to trend down causing the violent bart down

how does a short squeeze contribute to the plateauing of the price?

these plateaus last a while though. Wouldn't wash trading contribute to a prolonged plate, as in the bottom diagram of OP?

Also, what contributes to the height of a bart? Why does the initiator of the bart place a resistance?
