they did invent their own weak-ass hash function, yes. Some MIT students (or who not...) called them out on it, they had to change all the seeds in summer, and replaced it with an established one...
but what this episode shows, is that they clearly lacked code/algorithm audits and security concerns at least up to this summer. Nobody knows what measures they took since then...
