I'm glad I watched the whole thing but I didn't really find that I enjoyed myself at any part of the process. The bar is fairly low for exploration of interesting existential themes in contemporary media in general and animation in particular so it does stand out despite its flaws. I agree that it's overrated, but the meme potential and prevalence of kino scenes to draw from do give it a lot of staying power on the internet.

Recently rewatched NGE for the first time in 14 yeas and I've got to say it really held up. I know the show gets a bad rap because of the annoying fanbase but visually it really was something to behold. It's really crazy how on point they kept the animation despite all their budget issues. The machinery animation especially is so well-drawn it surpasses what they'd use CG for today.
