If the primary light source is a warm light, you won't get that saturated of a blue color on a white surface with nearby blacks being a warmer shadow color.

Shadows only come in one temperature at a time. This is why snow isn't fucking dark red, purple and blue all at once

Pull it up in ms paint yourself. The closest to blue you will get by finding the bluest pixel on the dress is a slightly bluish gray. The "black" isn't even remotely close to black and is indisputably gold.

No for facts. The image is an optical illusion but it's a non intentional one. The dress itself is Blue and Black but because the sunlight is shining directly on it, it alters the colors because of how we fill in colors in our mind. There also has something to do with how much you spend outside looking at things in daylight and how much you spend inside on your computer. But even then people who spend all day outside sometimes still say the dress is white and gold. So it's a dumb boring optical illusion that is fucking annoying and literally causes fistfights.

A modern Phone camera will try to digitally expose the image it sees in front of it. If it's in a very dark place, for example, underneath a clothing rail, it will over expose the image. You can CLEARLY see this with how blown out the background is.

The Dress is Blue and Black, but it does appear to be gold and white due to the over exposure.

The dress is white and gold in terms of local color and is seen here in shadow - here's how you can tell -1) check out the blown out light on the right hand side, this clearly shows that the dress is in shadow. if it were black/blue or any combination of dark tones it would be seen in silhouette - if you know anything about cameras/optics you'll know this is correct due to the pretty limited contrast range outside the application of HDR - graininess of the image also supports this conclusion, as low light conditions in the metered region drive up the ISO.2) drop the image into photoshop and color pick areas of the image (see attached) with the eyedropper - you will get warm shades - ie 'gold' in the yellow/brown range, but also some cool blue shades in the 'white' areas - most - as you probably know areas of shadow typically (though not always) have cool (bluish) tones, this becomes particularly apparent when the light source (behind the dress) has a warmish (yellow) tungsten tone. I can't explain how some of you see black and blue, i can only imagine its some kind of color blindness - its certainly not supported by the evidence provided by even a rudimentary understanding of camera optics, or by simple tests anyone can make in photoshop.

your eyes don't have this problem, but cameras definitely do. there are two light sources in the scene:
1) the light coming from outside. its daylight so its warm as shit.
2) the light coming from the inside of the shop, illuminating the dress. its a cooler white with more blue in it.
the dress is white. its a white dress. the white balance function of the camera is such that it prioritized the fuckin' daylight, rather than the tungsten or whatever the fuck lights that were coming from behind the camera.

SO WHAT? you white balance for the light that is illuminating the dress, and it turns fucking white and gold. feel free to eat my shit for the rest of your life.
