I was in the Navy during war time. Comfy and safe on a ship. It sucked and was boring but it was 100% safe. You will have a leg up for federal and state jobs. I even took classes while on deployment. Even small ships will take a professor on deployment that you can take regionally accredited classes with that will get you out of work while you earn credits.

I'm almost 40 and it was given to me. I could just put in applications in my city and have a job, apartment, and car within a few months. I'd be hired within a week. I did it on my own, without support from family or friends. I worked my up and it wasn't nearly as hard as it is now. Back then you could sign a lease for an apartment without some ridiculous paperwork, you could buy a car and just get insurance no problem, and you didn't have to worry about all of the red tape. I guess because it wasn't THAT easy I have no issue looking at younger people today and letting them know it isn't their fault they have to go through so much shit. My generation failed them just as much as the baby boomers did. Its' hard for me to offer advice. I just know I get tired of hypocrites my age or older fronting like they went through the same stuff these young people have to, and most of your advice is absolute shit and it's unrealistic. I can always tell when someone got a job through family or some bs network they didn't find themselves because their advice is worthless and their outlook on life is shallow at best.

solid job yes, reliable no. When you get steady work keep figuring out alternate sources of income and look for other qualifications in your free time. Those days are over and you need to be on your toes until you have some emergency money and excess cash put aside. For the wife and kids part, you are kind of fucked but you will be better off if you learn not to pick your partner based off the expectations of your friends because they are probably fucking dumb. Electrician, but I don't recommend being part of engineering department. You'll have more prestige and more time off in combat department. FC, sonar or cryptologictech were good rates when I was in. Especially cryptologictech because you have private locked rooms only your division can enter.
Also the Navy fully pays for your classes on deployment.
