Its used as a native token to create pairs for newer projects, rather then BNB. So BSC using BNB to support their network is the same as pancakeswap using CAKE. I suggest reading up on the tokenonmics section of their whitepaper to get a better understanding of how the supply inflates and deflates via certain mechanisms they have in place
