I worked with a guy on a sports gambling venture. His cut was 5%. We agreed on this prior to beginning.

In total we profited about $20k, so he was supposed to get $1k.

He ended up keeping $6k of it and said it was an accounting mistake and he'd pay back as soon as he got the money. This is in an email from him.

I was chill about it for a couple years because he was helping me with other stuff in exchange for delaying payment, but now I just want to collect.

He is just avoiding me, not responding to my emails, and we live in different countries. I believe he has little debt but also almost no savings. He's just completely disorganized.

I have email addresses of his parents and siblings, his main work contact (actually an important producer who some of you would have heard of), his contact list of 3,000 outreach for his work , his phone number, address, and a link to a page about him having committed a crime and served four years in prison ten years ago.

What is my best bet for recovering the $5k he owes me? I don't want to do anything illegal. I also do not care about his well-being whatsoever and would happily ruin him to get the money back as I feel he has wronged me.

Depends on the country. His specifically.

You have evidence which is good.

I would send one last email to him in a strong tone asking for the money.

If that fails contact a lawyer in his country. Usually a demand letter is enough to get your $

Yes, just work with a lawyer, you seem to have money enough to cover forward expenses.
