There was a bug exercised when the network was stressed that resulted in bad blocks being produced. The bug is fixed but the devs don't know how to bring the network to a consistent state since it's decentralised.

Now let's think about it rationally. If bad blocks were produced, they should be detectable by any node verifying the block chain. There might be a way to repair the bad blocks depending on the particulars of how they were produced. But even if you could, every node would have to recompute the block chain at the point of the first bad block, and redo the consensus process as well, as they go along.
Now, they say that it's not a protocol issue, but obviously they haven't engineered the capability for the network to find those bad blocks and purge them in a decentralised fashion. Right now there are probably a 100 sweat-drenched, Fez wearing Turks glued to their swivel chairs banging out a new, untested protocol extension to unfuck the blockchain, while Emin Gün Sirer shouts death threats at them over Zoom.
