That way he can just dump a stock at a moments notice if he ever wanted some liquidity. Another aspect of Elon and Bezos portfolios being almost entirely their own companies is that their net worth is directly tied to the company value, whereas Gates doesn't depend on Microsoft doing well to stay uber rich.

Decay is never eliminated by gains. Absolute gains are obviously higher with an 3x etf but the relative gains are worse. Volatility decay describes a structural loss against the underlying. The lower chart is a 3x nasdaq simulation. Nasdaq broke even in 2016 while 3x ndx is still down 98%. Nasdaq now up 180% whily 3x nasdaq still down massively.
