I only buy things that have good fundamentals. That's really it. If a product has a solid use case and it solves a problem and it's getting adopted by real companies that I'll buy in. If it's early you really have to be willing to hold even if it's dipping or crabbing a little before it goes mainstream.
As annoying as the Reef shill posts are getting, that's a good example of a coin I bought because the idea is good, the team is doxxed, they're making steady progress on their roadmap and it solves a problem that exists. They also have a lot of VC backing and a partnership with Binance and one with Visa in the works. So when I see something like that I just buy it. Worst case it fails and I'm out a couple hundred bucks. Best case is a x100 in a year or two.
You have to have a long term vision to invest in early products. I constantly see people buying some shitcoin for like 1 cent or less and then complaining when it doesn't immediately moonshot. Like I'll buy something that's still on testnet or in development and see people posting "It's dumping!" when there's a .005 cent fluctuation in price. Don't be that person. Buy into things that will be a real product and just hold. Not all of them will succeed, but enough of them will if you DYOR to make it worthwhile.

Throw $100 at each at or below ICO price, and if one 100xs it offsets any losses.
Things performing better (maybe 2x or 3x with $X mm Marketcap or $XX mm marketcap) I might add some more cash to from stagnant or failed ones.
My best performer was YFI which I found from a shitty tweet early last year, then did my own research and decided to buy. I have two YFI tokens rn.

The issue with PNK specifically seems to be that the team won't get off their high horse and work with any major CEXes to get a listing. Too proud to "beg" CZ or armstrong, and so they'd rather the project just goes back to 3 cents. They need to get their shit together, because it's a really solid project.

Also, I'm growing pessimistic over whether non-DeFi alts will have their time to shine. We all thought the same thing after "DeFi summer" occurred, and yet it wasn't followed by any kind of alt season for non-DeFi in the fall. And here we have another alt season, and once again it's basically DeFi-only.

Honestly though I think most of /biz/ would have better gains if they were just more patient. I got my boomer mom into crypto and I have her DCAing into a few well performing DeFi picks. This is how you lose your ass. Let me tell you a story about a guy who had 300k and fell in love with a shitcoin in 2018. He went all in on this shit https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/jibrel and lost a lot of money. The sad part is this was back when link was the coin that /biz/ was heavily discussing the most.

If he went 50/50 jnt/link he would have at least made 6 million dollars by 2020, if he split his 300k 10 ways and at least one project was link he would have made 1.2 million dollars
The moral of the store is there's a good chance you're going to all in on the wrong thing and fuck yourself up especially if you've never dabbled in crypto before. Personally if I had 500k I'd consider looking for at minimum 10 different projects to go in on that way even if several fail you might find a few that go x10 or more. Try to find actual use cases and when you find them figure out whether they're actually solving a problem or if it's developers just searching for a problem to solve. Are they focusing on building a framework, are they trying to improve overall functionality, etc.
If something is targeting a niche it's not worth it for the money if they're not targeting the rich or some way for that niche group to make money off the rich. Doesn't mean it's not worth investing, but it's not likely to rapidly shoot up.
If it's going for mass appeal ask yourself if you can imagine the average person using whatever they're selling. Using the example of exchanges, which are the ones you think the dumbest person you know could figure out on their own?

Well anon, I figure even some of the best projects aren't going to make it, or they might take years to get off the ground. I just look for things that are useful that have a good team behind them and have been endorsed or partnered with big industry players. So basically a lot of skimming through news, social media, whatever is on their website and reading whitepapers and stuff like that. Sometimes you have a good product but the market isn't quite ready for it too so you hold those. I never go all in on a gamble because there's the chance it won't take off. But keep your eyes and ears out for buzz. It helps to think of the business side of the game. You can have the best product in the world but it's probably not going to go anywhere unless it gets adopted by big companies.

I would rather have good gains over the long term than gamble all my money on a potential moonshot that might not even take off. If you win, then it can be huge, but I think you lose more than you win. I've seen people on here get wrecked like that.
As my portfolio has grown I can take on more risk for sure but think about someone like my mom who has like $100 to invest a month. I could gamble her money on shitcoins or just put it on stuff like Aave and watch it grow. You could honestly probably get better returns just putting a stablecoin on an AMM than a lot of people are seeing when they factor in gas fees, rug pulls, getting dumped, etc.
Personally I will take a little more risk because crypto is basically printing money right now but it's like 10% on gambles for me. If you have limited capital to invest it's stupid to bet it all on the next big thing. It should just get parked in stuff with solid returns that will grow steadily until you have a little more money to play with, and then only take part of it for that.
