Dont judge a project by its name, anon. If you're new, Polkadot has been the most hyped project since its ICO in late 2017.

Gavin Wood created Polkadot and was also the co founder of Ethereum and was one of the major contributors to it's code. It's not an Eth killer, it was designed to coexist with eth. Its a meta-protocol. A protocol to govern protocols. The platform is highly optimized. They took what they learned form Ethereum and developed a more mature model. Limited parachain slots mean that only the highest quality projects will obtain access and only the successful will be able to continue. No bandwidth wasted on pajeet scams. The crowdloan process is a mature model of the ICO model and helps avoid scrutiny from the SEC.

That's just some basic info. If you want a more technical breakdown I recommend just listening to Gavin Wood explain it. Hard to put it all into words in a gay thread. Especially when I didnt design it and write the code.

Yeah the auctions are kind of an enigma at this point. Kusama is the test network for Polkadot. Only fully audited projects can register for the Polkadot auctions but Kusama is more loose and experimental and has more available slots. Some projects plan to deploy on both and use the Kusama version to test new features but it still contains true value. Kusama will be a more wild and elastic version of Polkadot. Polkadot will be essentially like a standardized corporate chain in a sense.

The auctions for kusama will be happening pretty soon and will act as a beta test for the Polkadot auctions that will follow.

Cardano is offering (or at least promises to offer) the single most broad and all encompassing dapp/defi development environment with IELE, Plutus, KEVM, Glow, etc.
If fully implemented you could literally write dapps and smart contracts with any programming languance like C, Java, JS, Python, anything.
