the point of stakers is to oversee the network for ill behaving core nodes
when a node behaves bandly, it's score decreases and with it, it's rewards and rewards of stakers
your interest as a staker is to earn as much money as possible, so when you observe that you're not getting your shekels you simply move your funds to another node, and when enough people do this (when a node gets less than 500k staked on it) the node gets kicked from the network

The network is currently in the bootstrap phase, meaning that your rewards from staking and running a node don't come from people paying for your services (for now you only need to hodl enough aleph to get services, hence most whales being devs from other projects).
Second phase will introduce resource nodes (nodes that don't require 500k aleph, and will be overseered by core channel nodes), also you will actually need to pay in aleph to use services, not just hodl

it's blockchain agnostic and is made to power up DeFi (via cheap storage, Aleph Im messages that can trigger on events and that are super cheap, DID, etc. check out their website and see the use cases for yourself as well as Dapps built on it) - tho it can be used outside of crypto as well (look for our dropbox dapp, you can also host sites on Aleph, literally the aleph main site is hosted on aleph network)
Aleph also has a Python, JS and Java SDKs to make dev life easier
