The people throwing out dates either don’t understand the difference between short equity positions and short option positions, or they don’t understand that market makers hedge the open options positions.
Most of the “old” shorts have covered. The “new” shorts make up most of the 50% short interest, and they all shorted over $200 so are less susceptible to a margin call induced squeeze. There never was a scenario where market makers would have had to buy millions of shares on the open market. Not last Friday, not this Friday, not ever.
