You have to strike a good balance IMO. There are companies that have almost no net loss if you look at 5 year charts or more which give healthy (3-5%)dividends. In my area, $5,000 a year is enough to pay your property tax. It's nothing to sneeze at. A lot of super high dividend offerings are very precarious positions to hold. But you never know when a company will give you a very generous dividend of $30+ per share, too, even when the APY is only 2% average.
