I know they would get sued and would still have to pay an amount equivalent to what they would have lost via legal action, but then they actual purchase of stock to cover the shorts would not occur. What happens to the price then?

yes before the bell and the cutoff is by the end of the bell. They cover at the end of the bell during after-hours before 5 pm est. Trade will finish in T+3 days since the cover will be quite large. friday it will be parabolic because of gamma squeeze and then Monday-Wednesday is when the covering settles and that will also cause the stock to skyrocket. Wednesday or Tuesday is the LAST day before it implodes on itself.
