Also, does '10x' mean that the value of the instrument has increased ten times from when you made a buy position, if not then what does it mean? I also made a demo account on an exchange platform to see what would happen if I bought literally the minimum amount of an instrument, say like $1 of it, but I found that I had to also have enough funds to cover a 'margin' of upwards of $1000, sometimes even several thousand dollars. I don't understand this what does it mean.

Ran it through options profit calculator. Dropping 500 on a year long call when the price is 10.00 (on Jan 22nd, price was 10.16 and VIX was ~21) looked like the price had to move VERY severely in your direction in a pretty short period of time.
