That's the point, you are forcing them to buy at whatever price we want. Sure they can sell right away, BUT THEY HAVE ALREADY LOST THE MONEY.
Ill try to explain it. Here it is in simplified terms:
When you short a stock, you borrow 10 shares and then sell them right away, you got $100
You are betting they will go down, and when they do you will buy them back, So lets say you sold 10 at 100, now it went down to 50, you just made $50 a share.
If people buy the stock though, the price goes up and you are forced to rebuy the stock for more than you already sold it for.
You already lost the fucking money. If you sell right away you will just be in the red again.

What an investor expects to happen:

The price of /biz stock goes up to $15 per share on the day I owe you.

What happened with GME:
They sold more short-stocks of GME than what actually existed, in an effort to amplify the amount of money they'd make on the stock's price dropping.
This is because if GME went bankrupt, the investor would no longer owe the lender, and would rake in all of the loan money.
But
GME didn't go bankrupt...they shorted shares starting at $25-30, all the way down to $3...but now the shares have jumped up to $250-300.
The hedge investors have not only lost ALL of their initial investment, but they are now on the hook to other wallstreet lenders for an ever-increasing interest on a loan they can't afford to pay back.

When the hedge goes bankrupt, the responsibility of paying the short moves up the chain of groups which purchased them.

I cant tell you who I am, but my brother is a janitor who works at one of the offices who provided financial assistance to one of the funds who helped bail out Melvin and co.

He overheard the higherups talking about some of these reddit users actually being suspected corporate entities who are trying to arrange a takeover by pushing them into bankruptcy.
