Theoretically it's possible. During the big pump on monday the entire stock market took a dump to the tune of 15%. If these huge funds go bankrupt they'll have to liquidate their existing holdings in blue chip stock. If enough people panic sell it could cause a huge crash. Shorting is borrowing stocks. Pretty much only institutions can do it. Say Melvin Capital goes to a brokerage, TDA, and says "Hey, I see ABC is trading for 10 bucks, can I borrow a share? I'll pay you back a share at a later time." And TDA is like "sure, here you go", and gives Melvin the share of ABC to sell at 10 bucks. Melvin instantly gets 10 bucks from that sale. Then, they buy back the share from the market at whatever point in the future (obviously, preferably when the stock is down), to eventually "pay" that share back to TDA. They also have to pay an interest rate, but USUALLY (when it's not ridiculously overshorted like GME is right now) it's pennies on the dollar.
Problem is, GME went down, so they borrowed AGAIN to keep punishing it. Brick and mortar, muh blockbuster 2.0, the Coof, etc. Going bankrupt! So they kept punishing the position, greedy for every fucking cent they could get out of the corpse of GME. Except... then GME started climbing. And Melvin (and all the other hedges) went, "Uhhh fuck" and then TDA etc. were like "homie we're gonna need those shares back". And Melvin etc. used their good name and reputation to say "don't worry, I'm good for it!", certain the recovery was a temporary blip.
Then Michael Burry bought.
Then GME brought in Ryan Cohen and co.
Then the console cycle hit.
And the price just kept fucking going up
So now, the shorts are stuck because they were borrowing on the stock when it was 10, 8, 5 bucks. And they COULD have left at 40 or so, that was last week's big catch point, but they were SURE they could outrun the retail investors (that's people like us). Except every single day, they're bleeding interest. And the short interest kept fucking going (it was like 60% a share or some shit).
Now, it's simple supply and demand. The brokers NEED those shares back. Period. The hedge funds MUST buy those shares from SOMEONE. ANYONE. And who's willing to sell? Why, a bunch of retails who're like "best I can do is... $1k+"
