I could be wrong, but there's fundamentally no reason for them to 'cancel' student debt. As I understand things, it's too lucrative in the long term because it's essentially loansharking your own populace. I'll try to explain:

1) First, understand that student debt is a contract, and like the sub prime mortgages sold up the 2008 crash, that contract can be sold off by the debt creator (in this case, the gov, which promises gibs to poor students) to gain immediate access to capital from the finance companies since the gov doesn't actually mint/print it's own money, it uses the banks' money via the federal reserve, while holding the student debtee under the legal threat of the gov's judicial system if they somehow go bust for any reason which makes this an arrangement an enforcer/henchmen dichotomy than actual citizen assistance. It's a lot quicker to use this method to get money than waiting every year for things to be taxed during normal market functions.

2) The finance companies they sell the debt to is assured of a guaranteed appreciating asset because of the threat of prison hanging over the debtee. They can't declare bankrupcy out of it, and the interest accrues over time which makes the finance companies in no hurry to see it paid off. They can trade the 'contracts' like the 08 sub primes which makes student debt a practically zero risk investment since the labor of the student is the real trade good.

3) The ((college lobbyists)) saying that it's a right to have government paying for everyone's college are simply funneling more money to fellow ideological cohorts, while debt trapping the student to ensure the student doesn't get to gain economic mobility since the money they make goes to the ''capitalists'', not the noble 'revolutionaries'. It's by design to make YOU the commodity to be bought and sold much like data profiles that social media builds around their users and sells to advertisers and other governements.
