What reasons are there for LINK to get that high? I have lurked for a long time and still can't understand what incentive there is for it to reach very high numbers like that in the near future if at all. Would like to throw 5k in (80% of my life savings) but I just can't pull the trigger yet

if you want to learn about fundamentals of link you really need to check the archives, it's becoming very rare to have an actual discussion about it partly because of the influx of newfags and partly because most everything has already been discussed to death years ago. if you can find out what link is was and will be as well as the connections your next move would be obvious.
